Speaking of wasteful - in major cities not in Alberta, maybe 1 or 2 vehicles in 100 are full sized trucks (personal vehicles).
In Alberta - maybe 1 in 5 are trucks? More?

I completely agree.
So many people use pickup trucks to commute here when they don't need them.

My mother is one of those people, owning a vehicle much larger than she needs... on her fourth SUV now. Bit of an anomaly as she lived in the Caribbean for 40 years so winter roads are more intimidating than they would be to normal people. Her reasoning, in order of importance: 1) winter driving/AWD traction/getting out of deep snow 2) easier to get into than a small car, and 3) visibility/blind spots. Are these reasons valid? I dunno, but I bet one of these three reasons is a factor for the majority of people who seemingly have no business being in an SUV, and I figure she's worked hard enough to buy whatever vehicle she wants.
I've had a couple of Pontiacs. The first one was a 52 with a flathead six. I bought it for $75 in Castlegar. It had a roller brush paint job. Besides being a sight that car saw some sights.
This thread is kind of weird. I get the impression from posts about the Fiat 500L, Nissan Juke, and older model Subaru Tribeca that people like really unimaginative looking cars. The BMWs that share almost the same body lines as a Honda Civic, I think are more criminal than the aforementioned, although I think Saabs, no matter how unique, are really the ugliest things on 4 wheels.
