in terms of talent vs dollars, it has to be Engelland.
However, I dont feel the term or $$ amount itself is handcuffing and wont break our backs later on like that Pouliot one will to the Oilers

Yes. I'm unsure what the issue is. Poor grammar? It's a normal turn of phrase.

I'm curious as to how you came to that conclusion? More importantly where he went wrong and what you would have done?

I don't hate the Engelland signing, in isolation. But the term and the contract amount is just nonsense. And then he tried to explain it away by saying Engelland is good in the room. Which may be true. But isn't worth a 500% salary increase.
The guys skillset. Or lack of one, is eminently replaceable by a guy for league minimum.

As I remarked in the Engelland thread, the guy's skillset is replaceable by two to four guys for league minimum. He's (a) a RHD who (b) plays a tough physical game, (c) can fight when McGrattan is in the box or out of the lineup, and (d) can also play RW.
I think it's worth something to have all four of those roles filled while only using up one roster spot. Treliving seems to think it's worth more than I do, but Treliving also spoke about his character and leadership, which I don't know anything about. So maybe Treliving is actually right.

Engellends cap hit is definitely ridiculous but based on our cap situtation and the term who really cares.

Treliving admitted he overpaid for Engelland in order to get a right handed shooting defenceman. I also agree the amount was too much. That said the short term is not going to affect the Flames Cap in a negative way and his character will be good in the dressing room. Overall I don't see how this hurts the Flames.
I like the fact that Treliving talked to Crosby and some of his other team mates to get a low down on the kind of player Engelland is. He did his homework.

This thread seemed fun, but now seems to have devolved into a drunk and angry pissing contest. I'm scared to say anything other than the consensus as it may turn this thread into a urine soaked water show.
The Calgary signing seems to have filled a need. I wouldn't say it's a good or bad signing until we've iced the players to see what we got and whether it's good bang for the buck or just meh.

What was the opportunity cost of signing Engelland?
Basically nothing. He's not preventing younger players from coming up, we have no NHL ready defensive prospects besides Wotherspoon who's already penciled in. His salary isn't getting in the way of making other acquisitions. So what's the problem again?

Cammy at 5 years might be buy-out material in a couple of years.
Niskanen is unproven outside of Pittsburgh for me, and for the Caps to devote just over 10 million a year to him and Orpik is beyond insane.
Which teams have gotten themselves into cap trouble?

In a vacuum, Bolland, I think was the worst signing today. Too expensive, too long, for a player with back, ankle, and concussion injury history. However, I don't think it's going to hurt the Panthers in the long run.
Stastny might hurt the Blues, when they have to sign Tarasenko, but if he helps them to a Cup it's totally worth it.
Iginla could end up being really bad for Colorado if his production tails off, but I don't think it will, I think he's going to be good on that team.
On the whole... I'm gonna say that Ryan Miller is the worst signing even if the contract itself is pretty good, because it is going to delay the Canucks rebuild by three years. Ryan Miller is Vancouver's Jay Bouwmeester.

Bolland's cap hit is higher than Iggy's. Let that sink in...

how come no one has mentioned Komarov in here? 4 years (!) and nearly 3m (!) for a guy that didn't do a whole lot in his first NHL stint and then bolted back to Russia ... seems absolutely crazy if you ask me. One of the worst contracts yesterday IMO.

Komarov is still improving and plays with as much heart as anyone in the league. Also one of the best on the PK. I think Bouma will become just like him
Toronto made good moves today surprisingly. Trading Franson for Gorges would have been even better for them

You're not wrong. The Leafs contracts with Robidas and Komarov are quite horrid.

I still think that taking a year by year player that needs to be constantly motivated and pushed like Poulliot and giving him a long term deal and lots of money is going to kick the Oiler's in the a$$ heavily.
I'm betting he's a buy out in 2 years.
He's never been impressive, he had a decent but not stellar half a season last year and reading Ranger fans comments on him, they wanted him gone.
His nickname of Poo is not a term of endearment.

Should have made it a two-way contract so we're prepared for when we eventually send him to the minors a la Shane O'Brien.
