Is it time to bring in a new mod or two(no, not suggesting me) or start a returning posters task force. The Guardians of the Galaxy to the moderators Avengers?

Or you could just sit back and enjoy CP and be thankful that your lifetime suspension got revoked, and only turned into a "time out".

haha, yeah I don't think anything was revoked. It was just there until they actually figured out how long to suspend me for. After 10+ years that's the most I've ever been spanked by anyone here, and (I think) my time out had more to do with who I was having a back-and-forth with then what I did. No big deal, water under the proverbial bridge.
As a long time poster I'm just openly discussing ideas to improve the forum. Don't know why that would be an issue with you, it doesn't seem to be an issue with the moderating team. I realize it can be a bit of a grey area talking about why Y happened to X poster but it's always good to openly discuss how the board is going, including moderation.

But is it a case of mods not being able to keep up with returning posters, or is it a case of them allowing returning posters?

Neither, if we're going to put someone on death row, then usually we'd like more evidence than the opinion of a few posters. Sometimes that means waiting until there's enough evidence.

So i have a question? Is there a "discussion" between mods on either bannings or "allowing" of returning posters?

There's discussion about pretty much everything that isn't blatantly obvious. Banning anyone that's been around for a while especially.

They gots their own forum, yo. I remember kevanguy mentioning I was pretty close to a lifetime suspension one year when I had like 6 infractions or something, and it was close.
Now look at me, I've turned into a.....well, I don't get 6 infractions a year anymore.

I'm with MMF, the discussion is good, imo. A mod created the thread, and has allowed the discussion to take place, so I'm pretty sure they're okay with it.
I think any forum, while being as open and fair as possible to all members, should value the opinion of those that have been around a long time. Keep in mind how strong and awesome CP is. We take it for granted a bit because it's just always been here and has always had moderation that doesn't allow for this place to turn into a no holds barred attack fest like you see other places.
There's lots of forums out there that were great communities that people thought would go forever and then poor moderation lead to the site being overrun with swearing, attacks and no real discussion, then the people that used to love it leave and they dissolve.
Not saying that's anything that's happening here, I think overall this place is moderated very well, and it shows with the continued success, however I think this type of discussion is healthy and I think this thread should continue.
Not sure if the mods agree, but I'd like to see a little more back and forth, perhaps in this thread (there's been a bit already) where we can ask questions about why things are done a certain way and the mods can give a little insight into their reasoning. On top of that, we can make suggestions and they can weigh them out and comment, or explain how they've already discussed it and here's why.
Especially since this is in the help forum, out of the way of the general site traffic, so it's easily avoidable for those that don't care or don't want to see it.

I agree that some back and forth between posters and mods is a good thing.

I love and welcome conversations between the mods and the community - just keep in mind that if you want to have the conversation tone is important. Passive aggressive jabs don't play well and shut conversations down rather than provoke them.

None of my jabs have been passive aggressive, they've been fully aggressive. Incase that was directed towards me.
And when I asked about thoughts on my (and others) ideas about post limits etc to curb returning posters, that was a pretty fair question that wasn't sarcastic or rude. I've asked it several times and never got an answer, and when I did you basically brushed it off. Thanks to Photon who atleast gave a decent answer.

Can I be a mod? I have one change in particular I would like to make. Do mods have censorship power, BTW?

I think MMF said this in the last returning posters thread but wouldn't it be more convinent to allow these posters that the mods gave a second chance to use their old usernames? That way we wouldn't have this whole guessing game. Then again if they screw up with their second chance then there would be a problem.

That part I do get. Mods have said before it's because if they make the decision to allow someone to come back, they want to distance that poster from their previous username.
That one I'm on board with because we're not very welcoming as a community to posters who were banned for not fitting in. For example, if you had come back as Blairwitch again, this place wouldn't have even given you a chance. You would have been ridiculed and reminded of your first go around with every post, and may have reverted back to your old self.
Instead you came back as a new user, made a huge change in your posting style and are now a normal, contributing member of CP.

This is exactly why I don't like the public conversations where people try to figure who a returning poster is. It has the identical net effect.
If should be pretty straightforward, really. If someone suspects someone of being a returning poster, report one of their posts and leave it at that. If the mods allowed the person to come back, they'll either tell you or they won't, but the person in question will still be allowed to have their fair crack at coming back. These people are already being watched closely, so there's no need for the entire board to "help out" with that. If the person wasn't given a second chance and they're back here without permission, then quietly reporting it to a mod will allow the mods to watch the person quietly and pull IP logs, etc. Who knows? Maybe even the guy who's back without permission winds up being a decent member and the mods decide to let them stay.
The point being is that we all benefit from these people being left alone much more than the other way.
