It sort of is a big deal. The $ amount of this contract will be the $ amount for O'Reilly's qualifying offer for next season.
The Avalanche can't take him to arbitration again, so if they want to keep his rights for 2015-2016, the Avs will have to give him a qualifying offer for the amount of whatever he is awarded this year.

This seems more a "power struggle" between the Avs and O'Reilly than a negotiation

It's been a two-year long power struggle. Perhaps we can merge this with the "Jets do nothing, don't get better" thread and suggest Evander Kane for Ryan O'Reilly.

so if it is a 1 year deal, then he will be an RFA again next year?

Yes, he doesn't turn UFA until he plays 7 years in the NHL or turns 27 whatever happens first.
Next season will be O'Reilly's 6th year in the NHL.

So $6M next year, takes a QO of $6M the year after then becomes a UFA? With that huge contract, can't see the Avs getting a lot for him.
I hope he's sending Jay Feaster a Christmas card this year

I don't really see ~$6 million as being an unreasonably big contract for a 60+ point center.
I think tons of teams would be happy to take him in trade.

I think the biggest concern would be that O'Reilly will just accept next year's QO (would be 1 year and what ever his salary would be for this year) and then test the UFA market in 2016.
If that were to happen, NHL teams would be hesitant to give up full value unless he signs long term before a trade.

I think it's a foregone conclusion that O'Reilly doesn't have the Avs in his long term plans. This is the second time this has happened to him with this team.

Oh I definitely agree with that. Given his situation it would probably lessen the return.
I was just referring the post above mine where Phanuthier referred to it as a "huge contract".

Exactly. That, and $6M is probably fine for a player that you don't give up any assets to get. Everyone saw what high priced rentals cost this year..... nothing. Colorado is better off just keeping him for the 2 years till he hits UFA then seeing him walk, and hoping their team goes somewhere in the next 2 years... my bet is ROR walks and the Avs get nothing after those 2 years.

O'Reilly's a fine player but how does someone only get 2 PIMs over a whole season? You would think he would accidently take more penalties than that. For $6.5m+ I would expect more toughness or more scoring. He might be a great 2way player but that's a lot of coin to dish out for a complimentary player who clearly never mixes it up.

O'Reilly's good. I am hoping he still appreciates us sending him that offer sheet and signs with us (again) once he hits UFA.
He signed here once before, I could see him doing it again once he has full control of where he wants to go.

Since when did "mixing it up" ever win hockey games?
Having a guy that is competitive and plays good defense while not taking penalties is a huge plus.

If there is one concern about acquiring O'Reilly his "toughness" would be at the very bottom of the list. He is disciplined, but doesn't play conservative by any means - he was one the league leaders in takeaways last season. His lack of PIMs doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't stick up for teammates. Monahan took very few penalties last season as well but I wouldn't question his toughness either.
I agree with you that the cost to get him would likely be too much, and would likely involve a first rounder.

Pavel Datsyuk not worthwhile as didn't mix it up enough.... only 1 penalty every 8 games. Seems to me guys who are awesome two way players like Datsyuk with very few PIM are very valuable players.

Martin St Louis comes to mind as well. Highest PIM he's had in the last six season is 16
