Isn't McGuire used to work for the Penguins as an assistant coach? As i remember correctly, he replaced Paul Holmgren as the GM for Hartford Whalers.

While his dealing with the Savard situation was pretty terrible, his giving away of Martin St. Louis was worse.

Oh, I think he's definitely a smart guy, but he seems a little too..........enthusiastic/hyper to hold down a GM job in the NHL. Maybe he'll prove me wrong and be a solid GM one day, but I wouldn't want the guy near the Flames.

Every team in the league but Tampa passed on St Louis, that's just hindsight.

I don't discount that but there must be a reason he's been passed over all these years for jobs. He seems a little too hyper like he would be a kid in a candy store as GM. Seems to get overly attached and giddy with certain players like a fanboy.

Totally agree, I was just pointing it out as I had never heard that before. I assumed he was just a media buffoon, but he did have some credibility apparently

all I ever hear about is Pierre's "encyclopedic" knowledge of players, sort of like Loubo and his weird ability to recall the tiniest detail from junior hockey. well that's cool if it's true, but where's the evidence for his business acumen? the guy will have to build relationships with fellow league executives and do the hard math of cap micro/macro-management.
it would be like hiring the most brilliant scientist in your company to take over reins as CEO. what's that chalk covered nerd gonna do when he has to present at shareholder meetings?

guy was available in the expansion draft (no takers) and on general waivers available for anyone before Tampa gave him a shot
nobody, even Tampa thought this guy was going to be anything above and AHL-NHL tweener

Article about why McGuire got fired from his last NHL job
http://articles.courant.com/1994-05-...-paul-holmgren
Quote:
In a blistering post-mortem, captain Pat Verbeek called McGuire's firing the best thing that could have happened to the Whalers. He said other teams mocked their coach. He said his own teammates had no respect for McGuire. He said a number of players wouldn't have wanted to play in Hartford anymore.
Is Verbeek telling the truth?
It sure looks that way.
Every player and every non-skating member of the Whalers does not have the financial luxury or the courage to speak on the record as Verbeek and Sean Burke have. But in the past six weeks, we spoke to no fewer than 20 people --from all areas of the organization. The support for McGuire was almost nonexistent. It turns out that it wasn't only the players. It was almost everybody. And once owner Richard Gordon was convinced of the facts, McGuire was out.
|
Quote:
We said he was full of himself.
Many times he privately said after a game how he outcoached the other guy. But it was something never really made public until May 3, when McGuire proclaimed that no coach in the NHL ``can outwit me.'' That quote ran in The Hockey News and raised eyebrows all over the NHL.
...
On the bench, players said McGuire would taunt the other team, saying he couldn't believe the opposing coach was allowing him certain line matchups. This braggadocio led Pittsburgh's Jaromir Jagr to mock McGuire in December. McGuire got Jagr for an illegal stick, and after Jagr jumped out of the penalty box, he scored on a breakaway. Although he had scored big goals in two Stanley Cup championships, Jagr called this overtime goal the biggest of his life because he humbled ``that know-it-all.''
|
Quote:
We said McGuire is calculating and lost the respect of his team.
Consider the Michael Nylander situation. McGuire would throw his arm around the young Swede and tell him he loved him like a son. He told him they would lead the Whalers to great heights. But after a humiliating 9-2 loss in Montreal -- a humiliation that should have shared by 20 players -- McGuire embarrassed Nylander by insisting he be sent to Springfield. Then McGuire told some people, including Gordon, that four or five players were tired of Nylander not playing defense and were prepared to beat him up if he weren't demoted. There's no truth to that, Burke and Verbeek said.

However, as the article states, he is lacking in his ability to build a team, or as Harley has stated, make the team act like a family. I would imagine his passion for a player or players would cloud his ability to build a team.
I'm fairly thankful we have Treliving, who mentioned that there is no empirical analysis or stat that can determine how well Player A gets along with Player B. Pierre is good at what he does, but I often find a lot of his shtick as charismatic and trite, without the authenticity that would cultivate a culture of mutual respect.

It sounds like McGuire was/would be a terrible coach, however I think he would command a lot of respect as a GM.

Why? Because GM's around the league will know they can't "outwit" him? Know-it-all's aren't usually the popular guy in the group. Maybe he's matured but given he hasn't worked in the league for almost 20 years it appears he hasn't been able to shake his reputation.
He probably is very smart and maybe he could do a good job. It's a pretty big risk though given Crosby and Malkin in their primes. I think I would opt for someone that's maybe less questionable as another 3-4 wasted years and their window may be closed.

I just happened to be a big fan of St. Louis at the time, so saying it was hindsight on my part is saying you know what I was thinking and you don't. St. Louis was stuck on the third or fourth line as Sutter was intent on teaching him defence. You could see or at least I could see he had some great puck skills. You didn't see it, okay.

Yeah, me too. I scored a lot of goals with him in EA NHL99 or NHL2000 and I knew he was going be something special.
