Well Johnny, you weren't good enough to be taken the first time around... or the second time... but Welcome to Cleveland!

At least they can say they traded up to grab him.

Sometimes agents inform the players to pretend to be on the phone so teams think there may be some activity around the player and encourage teams to get him. The NFL draft is such a BS smokescreen show where the teams and agents often try to be so clever that they outsmart themselves.

A team has what, 5 min to make their pick? I would have figured after a whole year of deciding who to take, they would be able to inform the guy they are taking before the announcement is actually made

Well they don't. You can either let it bother you or accept that cell phones are ever present in society.

hahah ya it's really bothering me. I've just always wondered who they could be talking too.
Where are cell phones in the NHL's draft "ever present society"?

in so many ways the NFL draft is nothing like the NHL draft...

just be happy that they dont spoil the pick by showing the player getting 'the call' 3 minutes before their name gets annpoucned like it was a few years ago

The teams don't call the players like they do in the NFL. It's pretty obvious.

Well that's part of what I'm getting at. Why is it necessary to call them instantly?

Anyway, I don't really care, certainty not enough to be arguing over it. Just have always thought it was odd

They're not calling them instantly, they're calling them before the pick is announced and they're still on the phone on them when the cameras cut to the player.

This whole Manziel thing rings a little familiar to when the Broncos picked Tebow. They had a higher pick, traded back, took a WR, traded up, took Tebow. The planet exploded.

For Clevelands sake I hope Manziel is a better QB than Tebow although I'm sure the Browns would be thrilled to win their division and a playoff game with Manziel.

The other aspect you need to consider, is that the NFL drafts their players to become immediate starters, so there is a lot more movement up and down the draft order due to drafting very much by need vs by BPA.

These guys really dont have a top 3 teams that they expect to get drafted to, they genuinely have no idea where they are going. the call is basically a 'welcome to the team' 30seconds from now
