I remember watching us win the Cup, but I was too young to really appreciate it or even care. My first true memory of being an emotionally invested Flames fan was 2 years later, during the war that was the game 7 OT, '91 Smythe semis between us and the Oilers. I remember in game 7 we had a big 3-0 first period lead including a pretty Nieuwy goal, and I got sent to bed (school night) with us up 3-1. The next morning I awoke thinking we had won, only to find out the depressing news of an OT loss.
My first 5 years as a true blue Flames fan saw 0 series wins, yet THREE game 7 OT losses. Between that and being a new Stamps fan, where their dynasty-calibre club kept choking in the West Final, the playoffs were a truly gut-wrenching time to be a Calgary sports fan during the early-mid 90's, it was a tough start to my sports fandom.
Think I was just barely too young for Sports @ 11, but I certainly remember watching Sports @ 11:30, loved that show. Also remember watching 2&7 Flames games with Ed Whalan, still miss that guy. Crazy to think how much fewer games were televised back then, you'd maybe see 30 games. Can't even imagine that now.
EDIT: I also remember trying to find out scores the next morning before school, pre-internet. There was some telephone hotline # you could call and a recording would tell you all the scores, it's pretty hilarious in hindsight. I remember the recording voice was really slow talking and would drag it on forever, it reminded me of a very old Simpsons when Homer calls the pay per minute NFL gambling advice hotline where the guy says a word every few seconds. Missed my school bus a couple times in the morning cuz of that DB recording.

Lots of young ones here, kind of surprised. Late 30's myself, I have a kid older than some here.
Went to games in the first season at the Corral, dad had season tickets. I still love listing off some of those old names. Eloranta, Sheehy. Big Otto fan. I can remember going to the Sportchek in Sunridge to get autographs all the time, use to have tonnes of scrap books with pics and signatures.
In 86 I remember wearing big red Lanny mustaches everywhere during the playoffs. That loss was devastating to a wee lad but I don't think I quite understood the magnitude of it. Sadly moved to Topsail, Nfld in 89 so had to spend late nights following the action. Would have so much better to have been in Calgary though.
Sadly moved back to Calgary in time for the Young Guns era. And sadly in Van for the 2004 run. I've missed out on all the fun.

41 years old, and a Flames fan since 1980.
My early memories include watching the first game against Quebec on 2&7 and having to go to bed after the first period. But I do remember Goulet's goal for the Nords and Chouinard tying it up shortly after; I remember in early '81 going to an autograph session with Kent Nilsson, Jim Peplinski, Eric Vail and Ken Houston and being in awe the whole time.
we moved from Calgary in '83 and I ended up moving to a town filled with Oilers fans, which just made my love of the Flames even stronger. Day after the Flames knocked out the Oilers in '86 I went to school with my Flames shirt on and came home with several bruises from all the disgruntled Grease fans.

28. First real Flames memory I have is when Bure scores that breakaway goal and booted us out of the playoffs. My dad was always watching hockey. Don't think I really started to care until I started to play in tyke.

34. Been a hockey fan since about age 7. I grew up in Saskatoon and most kids including myself were either Oilers fans because of Gretzky or Pens fans because of Lemieux. The Flames were considered a joke and the 2-3 kids that liked the Flames got laughed at all the time. Fast forward to 2000 and I moved out here for University. Converted to a flames fan in about 2002 because of Jarome. I have been a fan ever since. I know I'm gonna to catch some flack for this but to this day I still dislike the old flames teams and players pre-2002.

Just about 25. Definitely not my first memory but the best was being at Game 6 vs Detroit in 04. I was in the second deck dressed in my Dad's old-school hockey gear along with my brother with a sign that had "Wings jersey + Tide = Flames Jersey: Tide Gets the Dirt Out". We were right over top of where the OT goal was scored. That puck squirted out to Gelinas with a wide open net and the whole arena went silent as everyone took a breath in. It seemed like the puck sat there forever. And then the place just exploded. I've never been a part of anything like that since. So amazing.

31, grew up in Northern BC so Canuck/Oiler territory...barf. Dad had the common sense to be a Flames fan and passed it onto me. First memory of the Flames is them winning the cup in '89 and a commercial of Lanny with the cup with the song "when you wish upon a star" playing. My uncle was a cameraman for the CBC and got me a tonne of players autographs from the Cup run, my grandma made me a scrap book with them and newspaper clippings of all the series. It's one of the most prized possessions in my life. I know this is dragging on but my dad got to hangout with Lanny a few years ago and showed him the scrap book, apparently he was pretty impressed!

36 years old for me.
My first NHL memories are all pre 89, but anything pre 89 is spotty. I remeber bits of the Edmonton series in 86, and game 5 when we lost the cup to Montreal. I also remeber my first trip to the Dome pre 89. But nothing concrete other than these random memories.
I do remember the 89 cup run start to finish (like crying like a baby after we lost game 3 in Montreal), and everything since then to now.
Favourite time to be a Flames fan though was still the 04 run. Such an easy team to like and cheer for, and no better time to go on a run then when you are in your mid 20's

i'm 25
my parents moved from nova scotia to calgary in the early 90s, and being a big hockey fan it was only natural to cheer for the home team. I was born in 88 so obviously i missed the cup run, but some of my earliest memories are of watching the flames on tv, and going to flames games. I remember how every game I'd gone to see as a child resulted in losses, except for one in 1997. I know it was this year because we were playing the mighty ducks and the row in front of me won VHS tapes of D3 the mighty ducks, and someone there was very gracious and gave my dad a copy of the movie
I still have a pedestal flames jersey with my name on it from back in those days that looks like it wouldn't fit on my cat let alone a younger version of myself
Obviously everyone who remembers 04 had some great memories, but my fondest memory has to have been game 1 of the stanley cup finals(my birthday). My GF took me to go see the movie Troy, and when we got back to her house, every single one of my friends was there waiting for me for a surprise birthday. Being 16, we were all pretty excited and that they won 4-1 is something i'll remember for the rest of my life
fast forward to today, 2 months to the day shy of my 26th birthday, and I should be a season ticket holder next year. crazy to think the cup run was 10 years ago

23.
Felt this was an appropriate thread for a guys first post, up until now I've only dished out some thanks.
I'm from Calgary and have been a Flames fan since my earliest memories of dad yelling "hit him!!" at the tv. My first game must have been '95 or '96. Don't remember who they were playing, only that I loved it but had to leave after the second because my baby sister wouldn't stop crying.
After Canadian Airlines went under my dad got a position with American and we moved to Dallas/Ft. Worth when I was 11. I have yet to miss a Flames/Stars game at the AAC since it opened, and Reunion Arena before that. '04 was special to me like many others here. My family was on vacation in Jamaica but I remember watching every single finals game with the sound of crashing waves in the other ear (that puck was in). My dad and I might have turned some locals into lifelong fans too, they loved it.
I'm going through the Police academy in Tulsa now, and I make the drive to OKC to see the Barons and Heat play when I can. Haven't been back to the dome for a game in years but Centre Ice and NHL Game Center keep me entertained and my fiancée rolling her eyes, it seems yelling at the tv runs in the family.
Anyways, just want to say I appreciate the insight from everyone, and GFG!

Your parents were making you go to bed early and watch hockey on a crappy TV when you were 21?

25. Born and raised in BC to a Wings fan in my mom and a Rangers fan in my dad. All my friends were Canucks fans, so I don't know if I was just became a Flames fan to spite them, or what. I do remember that my aunt got me a Flames hat when I was young.
