Whats the point of this league again? To draft 18 year olds or win stanley? If the Rangers make the final then Yzerman looks like an idiot because he strengthed a conference rival
|
Very valid point, but asset management is key in my eyes. Yzerman could use one of the picks he just got on a rental like Moulson, and be in pretty good position having both Callahan and Moulson for the playoffs, while still adding futures.

Right, but this is shortsighted thinking. A 1/4 chance is nice, but the Rangers are sacrificing future assets to win now. If they make the ECF and don't win the Cup, this trade is an absolute disaster.

I believe in the Jays.

Good deal all around. NYR get the better player but Tampa get's significant futures and get's a decent rental player for now.

It's a even trade. This hurts the Lightning chances on a deep playoff run this season. Only looks good if Callahan re-signs with a decent deal. The 2015 1st rounder is nice but it will be around the #15 overall pick so no guarantees.

I wouldn't say 1 in 4, they still need to beat what is probably a much superior team out West. That being said ECF's is pretty damn good.

haven't read the thread - sorry if redundant...
Straight up Callahan for St Louis: advantage NY
Callahan and a 2nd: definite advantage to TB
this?: ridiculous win by TB
Why does this never happen to the Flames???????

Wasn't there discussion earlier that said Buffalo was willing to give Callahan the contract he was asking for?
Wonder if they can flip Callahan plus something to try and upgrade to Moulson.

While I'm less 'enthused' for the Rangers now that there's the possibility they give up 2 first round picks I still think it's a decent move by them.
If they do give up a 1st this year it will be the 26th-29th in a weak draft but more importantly they've made it to at least the Conference Finals.

St. Louis demanded a trade.

Because St.Louis is a baby who asked for a trade since he was left off team Canada.
They were talking about it now and not only was he whining because he was left of Team Canada, but because he wasn't utilized enough when he was added to the team.
Lost a lot of respect for MSL through all of this.

What gives them a better change to win the cup... Marty St.Louis for the next 2-3 years or some unknown draft pick. Sure it could blow up in their face... but the odds are it will work out in their favour.
Would Tampa have made this trade had St.Louis not forced it? Doubtful.

Good for Martin. I think I will cheer for the Rangers this playoff season. I hope they do well.
I wonder if Sather will circle back around July 1 on Callahan?

Well lets be realistic. Is Tampa an upper echelon contender? No, not really. Could they win it all? Yes, but that argument is invalid because so can any of the 16 teams who make it to the playoffs. So maybe they sacrifice a small opportunity now, but if they hit on these picks they might be open up their window even larger in the future, when their very nice young core will develop even more.
Of course Tampa probably doesn't do it without him demanding it, because who trades a guy who's spent almost his entire career in one spot and is still producing at a high level? But he did force them, and with only 1 suitor, they came away with 2 major pieces that could turn into even more pieces. Realistically, does this trade make the Rangers legit Cup contenders? No, and in fact the Rangers are one 5-10 game stretch of poor play from missing the playoffs altogether. It's a very risky trade from the Rangers perspective, one that only works if they win a Cup now.

Neither - MSL does not make the Rangers a cup contender, especially with the subtraction of Callahan
Edit: in fact, Tampa Bay is better than the Rangers

That's a CRAZY haul for a 38-yr old guy that gave a list with a grand total of one team on it.
Rangers could have lowballed and forced the Lightning to play ball or be stuck with an unhappy player.
Very impressive trade by Yzerman.

If Callahan resigns, Tampa wins this no question. I bet they are banking on Drouin to be ready for the NHL next year and viewed Marty as expendable.
