One thing that may work against Canada this time around is the weak pool they are in. Historically they have done better facing adversity early on in the tournament, but at this rate they'll likely finish 1st in group B and not face a good team until the semis.
If you enjoy underdog betting, Finland at 12-1 is a nice choice.

That was a nice dig by Selanne at the press conference too.
*Paraphrasing*
Reporter: "Everyone is saying that the Final is going to be Canada-Russia"
Selanne: "I hope I can get tickets to that game but we hope to be there."

Naming Petr Nedved to the team, not naming Hudler to the team, not even dressing Pavelec against a powerhouse like Sweden, not giving Smid any ice time... It's like they don't want to win.

Well that was an excellent first 24-25 minutes, then Z & Co. apparently decided to go and have a coffee. Nonetheless, nice to start with a win over the toughest opponent in the group.

Selanne is awesome, it'll be a sad day when he retires.

Looking at the Czech boxscores, they dressed 8 d-men, benched two of them, played Milan Michalek and Hemsky 6 minutes and benched Hanzel. Didn't dress Pavelec.
Did I miss anything?

Their head coach wore a Jester's cap for the entire game. Oh, and they didnt pull the goalie for an extra attacker at the end to try and win.

If Eliteprospects/Wikipedia is to be believed this dude has been coaching the Czechs since 2006? And lead them to a bronze?
What the hell happened?

Maybe he's developed "Oiler's Syndrome" and thinks there is some sort of Olympic entry draft?

This.
This comment is why I don't like to see Canada win anything, can't stand the likes of you, arrogant and spoiled fans.
The ranking is based on earlier tournaments, and that is common sense.

Everything else notwithstanding that wouldn't necessarily be a terrible move. Goal differential will almost certainly play a huge factor in the seeding of the teams. They might have forfeit their chance at claiming the division but they have a better chance at claiming that final bye with a score of 4-2 than if they let in an empty net goal for a final score of 5-2.

the rankings are correct, it's kind of funny that Canada still got a really easy group of it.

If Canada is ranked 5th, who is the top seed in that group?

lol, based on earlier tournaments featuring other players
arrogant and spoiled? come on now...it doesn't take a genious to figure out Canada is not the 5th best team in this tourney.
Look at the vegas odds, guys with millions of dollars on the line and NOT CANADIANS. They all think Canada is the top team
By your logic we should rank NHL teams by how their AHL teams are doing
I know that is how they do it, all I'm saying is that its not accurate...works for us anyway since Canada has an easy group so please no crying when we dominate it

5th really isn't that much of a stretch. Canada could easily finish 5th.
1998:4th
2002: 1st
2006: 7th
2010: 1st
Is it 100% accurate? No. Is it the best way to do it? Yes.
People always spew that Canada doesn't have it's best teams at the World Championships, but forget that the other nations don't have all of their NHLers either so it is a level playing field in that regard.
Canada should actually be better off in that situation since we clearly have the best depth of any nation in the world.

Yeah the pools are a little odd because of the wonky rankings. Finland's "reward" for being ranked #2 was getting Canada in their pool while #4 ranked Sweden got the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Latvia. It probably would've been a bigger deal if Canada had slightly fewer points and ended up in 6th because it would've meant Russia, Canada, and the USA all in one pool.

Yeah, while goal differential will almost never matter in the pool standings (since head to head is the 1st tiebreaker and there are no ties), it can definitely play a role in the playoff seedings where it decides any tie between teams with the same position in their respective pools. The US got #1 in 2010 because of goal differential and that got them Switzerland in the QF rather than Slovakia who ended up beating #2 ranked Sweden.

Well I am happy to take any bets...the odds makers with millions of dollars on the line rank it like this
Canada
Russia
Sweden
USA
Czech Rep
could Canada finish 5th in a one game elimination tourney? Yes of course
but if you are trying to tell me they have the 5th best roster in the tournament you are totally out to lunch.
And yeah the world championships are not best on best so are meaningless when ranking a best on best tourney...apples and oranges I never said other teams had their best either
