Friedman confirms that the Oilers retained half of that salary.
So the Oilers save about 100k in salary cap space with the move and took on a contract for 3 more seasons...idiots.
Edit: Was looking at Dubnyk's salary and not cap hit. They actually take on 50k more in cap hit and take on that contract for 3 more years. They were better off waiving Dubnyk.

Yeah, that's the thing that McTavish is starting to be used to doing, something at the last minute to do something else.
Go back to having to fire Kreuger via Skype, its because at the last minute they realized they had to hire Eakins NOW or else.
Then, he has to make a rushed move to push Smid out the door so he can sign Bryz NOW.
This (certainly with the salary retention) has the indication of McTavish having to clear up a problem NOW (glut at goalies) before he trades for the next (eventual) problem.

Pretty sure they had plenty of room to sign him anyways. If not, just go with it and laugh at the wonder kids up north.

Also, you're crazy if you think Edmonton's through making moves. Could be setting up something else.

I kinda think the opposite will happen.

yeah, maybe. But I doubt it ... it's a going to be a very high pick. They should be at a point in their rebuild where you can sell off a couple of your young assets to finalize the roster to "go for it", yet they are at square one again.
also have to wonder which goaltenders are available. I doubt that Gagner will get them Reimer. The Ducks want to keep Hiller ... maybe they'd trade Fasth, since they also have Andersen and Gibson, but Fasth has been injured a lot this year ... big risk. Maybe they could trade for a guy like Scrivens or Neuvirth, since Jones and Grubauer have been good in L.A. and Washington respectively ... but Scrivens and Neuvirth both are probably not starter material. Miller surely won't go to Edmonton. Backstrom has been mediocre at best in Minnesota this season, but since Harding has MS, it's risky for them to give up on Backstrom. Sooo ... who else?

For some strange reason this trade makes me mad. How can anyone make this bad of a trade? Dubnyk was an OK goalie

Mckenzie reporting Scrivens to EDM for a 3rd.
So a 3rd + Dubnyk for Scrivens + Hendricks.
Guess overall that is not that bad. Is Ben Scrivens really a better goalie than Dubnyk though? Doubtful
Scrivens is also a UFA so it still gives them no NHL goalies signed passed this season. Edmonton is no better of a team right now (IMO) and they gave up a 3rd round pick to make it happen.

Scrivens has decent numbers but will get eaten alive behind that Edmonton defence.
Guess he was expendable with how well Jones is playing as a backup

they already plan on picking Ekblad so they aren't moving their first anywhere.

Hard to guage:
1. Goalies have weird value sometimes
2. Ward is expensive, oft injured, and playing poorly

The only defenceman that would help the Oilers right away is a #1-2 D which obviously is way out of Dubnyks price/value range. Hendricks is a big, gritty bottom 6 forward which has some value for the Oil.
Also this just in: Oilers aquire Ben Scrivens from L.A. Guess there will still be a legitimate battle for #1 goalie

I believe in the Pony Power

The bigger winner here is Dubnyk. If I was a goalie looking to get my career back on track I would want Phoenix or Nashville - they make goalies look better than they are.

wow, so the oilers now have another goalie who might turn out like Dubnyk and suck because their defense is so bad. a tougher player in their bottom 6 won't hurt but what else does Hendricks bring?

Yes! This combined with the other moves will pump them up for 10 or so games.
