I am still not sure what happened to him once he got to Calgary, but he stopped playing that he used to.

I blame Brent Sutter. Not sure if he had anything to do with it, but I just really hated Brent Sutter as our coach, so blaming him for everything comes easy.

IIRC, Hagman had also played PK in his time with other teams before joining Calgary. Brent Sutter didn't know this apparently (like Brent was also unaware that Kotalik had one of the biggest slappers in the NHL, and used to be utilized on the point on PPs). Hagman was a very good 2-way player, he was just fading quickly by the time he arrived in Calgary (as was Kotalik incidentally).

I am not sure I think the comparison is apt, however. Both Granlund and Hagman had a great nose for the net, and a great shot, and they both willingly go into dirty areas regularly. Hagman seemed a bit more physical along the boards, however, and Granlund seems like a more cerebral offensive player.

In Dallas he was the 4th or 5th forward for the PK so a decent amount of time. In the two years with the Leafs before coming to Calgary it looks like he was rarely used on the PK.

Hagman was getting too old for the NHL pace when he was in Calgary. His skating wasn't where it used to be so he couldn't really even play a good two-way game.

Granlund seems smarter. Hagman was more a hustle type. I don't see Markus developing tunnel vision like Niklas had. Also Granlund is more of a trigger man rather than stick-handle-through-traffic and can maybe score further away from the net.

Not necessarily a good comparison when there are a couple of better ones on the team right now in Cammalleri and Stempniak, but a career like Hagman's from a non-first-rounder is usually very positive. Fans should be happy if prospects like that have any kind of significant NHL careers.

Yeah, from what I've seen of them, I don't see any hockey resemblance between Hagman and Marcus other than they come from the same country.
