They kind of did give up an asset......they had to trade one of their best d-men to free up cap space to sign him.

Does this mean the Devan Dubnyk experiment is over?

Too bad... or maybe it just means it has been put on hold until next year!?!

Well...this is the last move for a while according to MacT

When he says "potential", is he referring to the potential of getting a lottery pick?

Bryz can be a very good goaltender in the right situation. Too bad he is in the worst situation in the league.

I think Carolina would have had some good potential for him (small media market, it rarely hits -32), but alas, we can get our bags of popcorn

Elliotte Friedman ‏@FriedgeHNIC 6s Note on Bryzgalov contract: It is a $1M bonus and a $1M pro-rated salary, so his actual cash is a little less.

So if true the this must have been that BOLD move MacT was talking about. If that's as bold as it gets I think most Oiler fans will be pissed!!

I guess he sees the writing on the wall and is going to work on "re-building" the team for next season

Its brilliant Oilers logic.

"Our defense is shambolic! Quickly, get rid of the defensive defenceman so that we can buy the the borderline sociopathic goaltender!"

With all my desire to hate on the Oilers, I have to say, signing Fo Sheezy my Breezy in isolation is a good move. It's not a slam dunk, but because they got a cost effective short term contract, it's a pretty low risk move that could pay off in spades and improve their club if he plays as well as he's capable of.

In the bigger picture though, they did essentially have to give up one of their best, relatively young, and contract friendly D-men to facilitate this move, on an already weak defensive team. I guess we will have to see what else MacT might have up his sleeve and how the assets the Flames gave up work out for them long term to fully evaluate Mac's strategy here, but it really is unfortunate for them that they had to weaken their D to pull this off.

Desperate move by a desperate GM who is realizing the job is much more difficult than he made it sound when he took the helm. Bold moves indeed

I think its important to not:

- Oilers trade Smid
- Buy a UFA
- Are up against the cap

Not the hallmarks of a rebuilding team. The rebuild is over folks, this is the final product.

If I'm understanding that correctly, that should mean it's a $2M cap hit, but because about a quarter of the season is done, he'll get paid $1.75M.
