Was never going to be a suspension; not the first time an unwilling participant has had to fight.

If the one ref in the video had attempted to get emery off of holtby, he would be putting himself in a dangerous and vulnerable position. The best thing for him to have done is to step back, keep track of everything that is unfolding, and wait for his partner to come in order to break it up. The question for me is where was the other man?

Finally, a voice of reason. As someone who officiated minor hockey for 10+ years (including a lot of Midget and Junior where fighting is rampant) I find it hilarious that people think that one referee (not even a linesman, who would be much more experienced in breaking up fights) should have stepped in to try and break up an NHL fight himself, let alone a fight where one of the two combatants is a former golden gloves boxer. Why should that referee have to put himself in a position where he could incur serious physical harm? Is keeping Brayden Holtby "safe" more important then keeping himself safe?
As for Emery, garbage move by garbage player, nothing more to be said about that.

Obviously it was pretty classless, that, I think, is a sentiment shared by everyone. But the whole "he should go to jail/that is assault" angle is a complete joke. It's hockey, fighting happens in hockey. What happened was not a suspendable offence in any way shape or form.
I'm an admitted supporter of fighting in the NHL, and I fully admit that things like this are embarrassing and really, give fighting a bad reputation, but the over reactionary people out there need to calm down. Jail? Assault? Please. This is hockey. This very same scenario has happened countless times over the last 20, 30, 40 years, and yet somehow THIS is the time someone should go to jail.
Give me a break.

The ref waved his arm at the other refs in a "no, I got this!" kind of manner. He could of had other refs in there to break it up and he denied that option

Pretty sure all the other refs were busy with other fights and he was waving off the capitals players who were trying to intervene.

When the commentator said, "Now Emery is racing up the ice...", I thought he was gonna go toe to toe with Simmonds. Emery's a frickin' coward! The other fights were definitely awesome and the fans enjoyed that. So, I don't agree with banning fights in a game - just ban idiots like Emery, who beat up someone that doesn't want to get involved. This is why enforcers are needed on a team.

All of the above is fine because Holtby made the decision to take the helmet off and throw punches at Emery. Where it gets messy is when Holtby gets turned around. I think the ref should be in there immediately to stop them because the fight is now over. I also think that Emery should have some respect for Holtby and stop throwing cheap shots when the fight is clearly done.
The only justification I can think of for Emery is that he was done fighting clean when Holtby threw those punches with the blocker. That's still no excuse to repeatedly punch a defenseless player and I would definitely be in favor of a one or two game suspension. If Emery stops punching when Holtby is turned around, this fight is no big deal.

By this logic shouldn't have McGratton stopped punching McLaren when he got his jersey up over his head?

I wonder if Ray will have a nice little run in with a certain player that all of a sudden is having a problem stopping....

I dont think anyone will try Emery right now, for fear that their goalie will be beaten up next shift.
