#1 d man on a team leading their conference and likely going to the playoffs again. The butt hurt in this thread doesn't reflect well on us. Lets move on from the 2nd worst trade in flames history and heal together.

Maybe you were one of those guys who played a sport that didn't keep score, but almost winning a trophy isn't an accomplishment. He has zero real NHL accomplishments.

The key flaw here is that he's not a great player, and he doesn't have those intangibles. As I said, he's good, even I'd take him at 6.5 (not with Wideman around), but if you think he's got those intangibles that makes him one of the greats then I'm pretty sure you haven't watched a Phaneuf game in many years.
I watch the games on HNIC and who has a quicker/explosive side step than Dion. And calling him great isn't a big stretch either.

All he does is side step. I would hope he's good at it by now.

If you'd watch Phaneuf this season, and it is early, his game looks like it has turned a corner. He's playing with alot of poise. Looks rock solid out there.

Yeah, pretty decent stats so far, 7 points in 13 games and +10. 14 PIM.

So he's an NHL great because of his sidestep now?

That's kinda my point, you put all those things together and you have a good player. We also all know that most players that play on World JR. teams don't go on to the NHL. It's not a given.

When you say a defenseman "compares to the greats," this is what is envisioned....

Orr
Lidstrom
Potvin
Coffey
Bourque
...
Phaneuf

Just no.

Of course not, it's one little example of what he has that others don't. It's those things that separate the good players from the great ones.

Well no because you're talking 3 different generations here. Look at how much the game has changed in the last 5-10 years even. Phaneuf is definitely amongst the best of his generation and that puts him in with NHL greats.

I wouldn't pay that if I were an NHL GM but those numbers aren't out of line at all.

If he goes to July 1 he would easily get that. I bet the Oilers would be willing to make him the leagues highest paid player.

All of the players I mentioned (and there are many more) are from different generations, yet are categorized into the same level as "greats". You do not enter this level unless you are in fact "great". Unless you can transcend the time in which you played and be categorized amongst the games best ever, you are not "one of the greats".

Phaneuf isn't even the best defensemen in his draft class and has been passed over by many younger dmen since. He's not even close.

EDIT: I think the only current Dman who could possibly be considered in that category is Chara. The guy should have been winning the Norris for the last 6-8 years if it was actually being given out to THE BEST DEFENSEMAN and not the defenseman with the most points. Also Lidstrom stood in his way a bit, but an arguement could be made for an aging Lidstrom vs Chara in his prime. But Lidstrom was still dominating at 40 years old so its a thin argument.
