All of the players I mentioned (and there are many more) are from different generations, yet are categorized into the same level as "greats". You do not enter this level unless you are in fact "great". Unless you can transcend the time in which you played and be categorized amongst the games best ever, you are not "one of the greats".
Phaneuf isn't even the best defensemen in his draft class and has been passed over by many younger dmen since. He's not even close.
EDIT: I think the only current Dman who could
possibly be considered in that category is Chara. The guy should have been winning the Norris for the last 6-8 years if it was actually being given out to THE BEST DEFENSEMAN and not the defenseman with the most points. Also Lidstrom stood in his way a bit, but an arguement could be made for an aging Lidstrom vs Chara in his prime. But Lidstrom was still dominating at 40 years old so its a thin argument.
