Maybe age demographics come into play but if its Smashing Pumpkins it has to be the Siamese Dream album for me.

This changes a lot, but one of my faves that I feel is the most musically superior:

Tool: Lateralus

Ok if i HAD to narrow it down to one album, i would probably go with this:

Incredible production and lyrics. As close to perfect as you can get. "Don't forget all caps when you spell the man's name"

I watched a doc on Pink Floyd the other night and they kept saying that DSOTM (especially "Breathe") was about youthful angst. I find great comfort listening to it now. I don't think they give themselves enough credit.

Zep 4 is great, but for an entire album, I agree with pylon on DSOTM.

I also love Never Mind the Bullocks, but you really have to understand the context in order to appreciate it. I wish Mr Lydon could be POTUS...really, he was never the weirdo he was portrayed to be.

Also, PF's "Meddle" is pretty cool, too.

Just curious-without googling, have any of you ever heard of the band Saigon Kick?

Wait, that's a thing?

I always thought your avatar was Jarome Iginla with the Leonidas mask from 300 photo shopped on.

Haha nope. He's the one and only MF DOOM.

Fantastic choice. One of my all time favourites as well.

Not sure how age demographics can come into it with albums released around 2 years apart.

Siamese Dream is also a great album, but it doesn't have the breadth of Mellon Collie, IMO.

Man, I still remember when that album came out. Went to a buddies house and just sat in a room with like 8 other kids and listened to it front to back. What an amazing experience that used to be, and one that's sorely missing for kids today.

Now a days, most songs off an upcoming album have been previewed by listeners on youtube or other sites, and then people kind of just steal or maybe purchase the album if it sounds good.

It would be tough to explain to a group of teenagers today, just how special the day was when a much anticipated album came out, and you didn't know what you thought already, you just went to HMV, had the joy of looking through the CD pamphlet, then put it in and just listened.

Even now a days when I preview new songs from a band I like on youtube, it's not the same. On a computer, you tend to be distracted, and if the song doesn't hook you immediately, you kind of still listen, but do other things, where as back in the day, it was just you and the CD player and for better or worse, you listened.

You may have disliked certain albums still, but back then it was because you listened to the whole thing multiple times and then decided you just weren't digging it. Now a lot of the time when people dislike an album it's because they gave a few songs a sample listening while doing whatever and didn't really feel it.

I dunno man, I'm going to have to agree with the pro-Siamese Dream slant.

It's all killer, with less filler than Mellon Collie. Like, the first 7 songs on Siamese Dream are pretty much a descending list of my favorite Pumpkins songs (save Jellybelly).

I should also add that I heard Mellon Collie first, it just felt like too much of the album was just maintaining track space until the next big song. Especially Twilight To Starlight. Doesn't help that I loathe 1979.

2 years difference is a lot of things to a teenager. I remember a lot of hate in my school when Melon Collie came out because the first single was epic and carried much of the sound from Siamese Dream. The problem was the rest of the album went in some different directions that stunned some Pumpkin fans. I initially hated Mellon Collie but over time I warmed up to it.
