If the pricing was the same, I dont think I would ever travel through Vancouver again especially with a small child. The 2 hour/4 hour flights through SFO are great little flights.
Also +1 for United Economy plus, paid 30$ US per seat each way on the OGG routings in advance with seats D and F and had the middle unoccupied each time since our little guy was a lap baby.

This.
Last time we went, we had YYC-YVR-LAX-OGG (yikes!), and OGG-LAX-YYC, just because there was not much available, and that was all we could get without paying over $1000/person.
I hated it. Not just because of the 2 stops on the way there. That wasn't even so bad.
It was the long walk through YVR...it seemed like we went up two levels, and then down again, plus an extra security check, it just seemed endless.
And LAX is just...LAX. The terminal change between AC and UA is just terrible. For such a large airport, you'd think they would have a train going between the airside of the terminals, like at FRA or DFW. Nope. You have to exit the airport entirely, and wait for a terminal connections bus that may take up to 10 minutes to come. Then go up to the departures level, check in, and clear security again. Its just a nightmare.
We've flown through SFO before, and its much better. Unless you're having to spend $200/person more, avoid the LAX routing at all costs. In fact, fly WestJet if you can, and get the non-stop flight from YYC.

The non-stop flights to OGG and HNL with Air Canada have already started for the season too. I believe the WestJet ones start around December 14th, they were to be operated by their new 767 but they are somewhat delayed and will be leasing an aircraft to fill in in the meantime.
Non-stop can be long with kids but I much prefer it to stopping on the way. LAX is the worst.

Our upcoming trip was precipitated by an Air Canada seat sale - it was cheaper to fly to Maui than it was to Toronto. It's a direct flight from Calgary, but of course it's seven hours and our kid(5) is a wildcard. We're hoping we can do half iPad/TV, half sleep on the way there.
He's pretty excited about the trip, so hoping to do a lot, but every time I look at the exchange rate I wince.

Us too. Didn't want to go to the US when our loonies are worthless but $400 direct from YYC to Maui is hard to turn down.

*Non-stop, you are both on the non-stop flight. A direct can have a stopover in another airport and the flight simply retains the same flight number for the entire routing.

I had to get it off my chest!
Now back on topic, make sure anyone heading to Maui get a pie or two or three of four from Leoda's. So so so so so good.

My first and last stops on Maui are at Da kitchen. Really good Moco's and short ribs. It's like a block away from the Costco.

Just booked a trip for March.
Any restaurant recommendations around Kaanapali Beach? Sightseeing / nature / tour recommendations (adults only, past the party years)? Snorkelling recommendations?
Thanks for any suggestions!

We love the Hula Grill in Whalers Village - right on Kaanapali Beach. It's a beach bar so you sit in the sand right next to the ocean.
Also highly recommend the Molokini crater snorkel tour - our favorite your company is Maui Dive Shop. They have a retail store in Whalers Village as well where you can book and rent snorkel gear.
Maui is my favorite place. You'll have a great time!

I can second every recommendation, the Molikini crater snorkel tour with the giant turtle tour in the same day was the best thing I ever did there. Turtles were bumping into me there were so many.

Our favourite beach for snorkeling and boogie boarding is Honolua Bay about 15-25min north. DT Fleming is decent for boarding. La Perouse Bat is also pretty rad for snorkeling. If memory serves its a black sand beach. We also always go to http://www.hotislandglass.com They make some amazing glass art if that's up your alley. If you have $$ then do a heli tour around the Iao Needle.

Just returned from Maui last week. Another thumbs up for Hula Grill - great atmosphere.
We also had a really enjoyable dinner at Fleetwood's on Front Street in Lahaina - dinner via sunset on the rooftop, a sunset ceremony (both bagpipes and conch shell), a rock/blues band, and to top it off, we were lucky to meet the owner - rock legend Mick Fleetwood!
My wife and son also went on the Reefdancer and enjoyed it - part boat, part submarine.
If you're on a budget at all, try to take some basic snacks or food with you - groceries are expensive even before you add the 40+% uplift with the exchange rate.

Maui Dive Shop for sure. Affordable and friendly. They leave early but you get there before the crowds which is awesome.

We went with Kai Kanani and it was fantastic.
Extremely nice boat to get out there, great crew and equipment and you aren't stuck on the boat forever getting there and back based on where they are located.

Awesome, thanks very much. We are staying in Kihei, any 'must visit' restaurants?
What about Uber vs Lyft vs cabs? How hard is it to get home if one has had a beverage or two.
