Holmgren should be pretty thankful that Pronger is injured because if he retired with the contract he has the Flyers would be ####ed

Pronger comes off the books once the season starts so Philly does have money to spend.

I took a trip up to the Philly HFboards and I think all hell has broken loose.
They talk about signing Tim Thomas, putting in an offer sheet for McDonugh, trading for Blum, Zubrus, or even Martin St.Louis. I repeatedly asked myself was this mental asylum chat room or an NHL fanbase. They talk of so many ridiculous trades like Ryan Murphy for Read! So I have come to the conlusion PHILLY IS F-ING NUTS

I have no idea if Lecavalier still has what it takes to be where he use to be but I'm guessing he will be bought out again near the end of his contract.

IMO he is a lot more relevant than Iginla now. Three years younger I know, but I thought Vinny played very well last season while healthy. He was playing very big and bringing a more physical aspect to his game. Still has incredible scoring and playmaking touch.

The years and term might be a little off but he's a UFA and you have to overpay. I think he will be great with Philly...but I agree he is potentially a buy out candidate in 4-5 years time.

I was watching the talking heads on sportsnet last night and one of them thought that the way the contract was structured, that he would retire after 3 years and it would not cost the flyers any money.

I'm still not really big on that blueline for some reason.

Mason is still a problem at goaltending, but that forward group is very good and for the most part young.

I think that they'll make the playoffs this year. I also think that the shortened season disguised some bad teams in the East and West.

Really their #2 centre is Sean Couturier???? 4 goals 15 points -8 in 46 games.

He would be 3rd line behind Stajan and Backlund on the Flames.

With Lecavalier signing Sean Couturier might be spending some time in the minors.

Make sense that they send Couturier and Colburn to Edmonton for one of their young guns.

Possible the Flyers get a taste of their own medicine here from the other NHL teams? Kessler, and Weber come to mind.

Claude Giroux RFA next year I could see someone handcuffing the Flyers if Giroux were to ever make it to RFA if he were not to be extended before then.

yeah obviously Couturier and Schenn should be flipped in that chart, my bad.

Or you should have Lecavalier at 2C with Schenn playing wing and Couts at 3C.

Anyway I'm pretty sure these guys are going to flip Meszaros for a bag of pucks and free up another $4M. Unless they can get assets for Coburn.

They might need to consider trading one of their forwards for some defensive depth if they think they will make the playoffs and doing anything if they make it. Not sold on that defensive group or the goalie but the forward group is good.

Still not sure I would have signed Lecavalier for that long. Seems steep.

Defense was ravaged by injuries last year. Coburn, Grossman, Mesz, and Gustafsson missed a lot of time (that's #1, #3, #4, #6). And then their depth defensemen, Gervais, Lilja, Huskins, and Foster, also all got injured. Schenn was forced to play a lot bigger minutes than expected; Kimmo is getting up there in years, and is more of an offensive defenseman.

If they're healthy, the D should bounce back. Streit will help them a lot this year. Kimmo is getting old, and Mesz has become a shell of a player, but the D still looks good to me.

My thoughts on contracts:

Hartnell: 4.75M, 6 more years: Fan favorite, good character, grit. Term is horrible. Will be a good contract for maybe 2 more years, then I'll hate it.
Vinny: 4.5M, 5 more years: Okay value for the next 2 years. then I'll hate it.
Giroux: 3.75M, 1 year left: Steal. He is in the realm of Toews, Datsyuk, Staal.
Schenn, Schenn, Coturier, Read, Simmonds, Voracek: A great young core here. Coturier is so underrated: he's 20, and being groomed as a shutdown centre. But he also has great hands/skill: he'll break out a 70pt season soon.

Timonen: 6M, 1 year left. Over the hill, gotten pretty weak on the back end, but still a great offensive contributor.
Streit: 5.25M, 4 years left. Good value for the next 2 years.
Coburn: 4.5M, 3 years left. Seriously reminds me of Regher in his prime, with slightly better puck skills.
Grossman: 3.5M, 3 years left. Like a Coburn-lite.
Meszaros: 4M, 1 year left. Injuries did to him what they did to Gagne. Hope he can have a rebound season. He was such a complete defenseman in Ottawa: hits, shoots, blocks shots: now he does none of that.

Mason: I hope they sign a 2nd goalie and have a decent tandem.

The team is built to win now. There are some horrible 'win-now' contracts and too many long-term contracts, but they have money to buy out players, and also a great young core signed to good contracts.

Anything is possible I guess, but I don't see it.

Vinny at $4.5 cap hit until he's 38 is a way different ball game than Vinny at a $7.7 million cap hit until he's 40.....not to mention the cap recapture penalty risk that went along with that mammoth front loaded contract.

If the Lightning contract had the same term and cap hit as his new one with the Flyers ($4.5 million for five more years) the Lightning wouldn't have bought him out in the first place.

But hey, it's the Flyers...so you never know I guess.

Maybe it's been posted already, but is Ginny now the highest paid player in the league in terms of hard cash?

EDIT: Looks like Weber is the top of the cake, though his cap hit is around half.

Anyone else looking at some of the centers being signed today and thinking Phili got a heck of a deal here? Still not sure it's a good contract, but comparatively speaking it looks fantastic in my mind
