McKeen's guide has a glowing report on him. They have him ranked 26th.

"A well rounded prospect and heart and soul type who will go to the wall."
"suffocating 200-foot presence - all over the ice"
"manages the puck intelligently,
"demonstrates excellent positional awareness and execution skills"

Those nuggets amongst a lot of other good comments.

Rotoworld's Analysis:

Emile Poirier has been selected by the Calgary Flames with the 22nd overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Poirier has skill, but he probably won't develop into a top-tier scorer. That being said, he plays a competitive, aggressive game and could bring the blend of penalty minutes and points that fantasy owners love. He's not slow, but his skating could use some work as he can be awkward in that regard. He had 70 points and 101 penalty minutes in 65 QMJHL games in 2012-13. He could stand to beef up and should be regarded as a bit of a long-term project.

May not be the popular pick but give the kid a chance and see what he can do in a Flames uni.

I think this is a great pick.

If Detroit is passing on Hunter with their pick at 20, I am okay with Calgary passing on him 2 spots later.

Great point actually. Detroit has had amazing success and if they don't take Hunter with their pick it tells you something.

This year's Jankowski pick. Just like we'll be tracking the development of Jankowski versus Teravainen we'll be dealing with endless comparisons between Poirier and Shinkaruk.

Funny but that name came to mind for me when they talk about his skating. I guess even if he doesn't turn into an elite talent he can be a good penalty killer and utility player.

On the Fan, he said he wondered if he might go to Calgary or to Montreal at 25.

Those conversations always happen, they aren't exclusive to any one draft position by one team.

From Redline:

21. Emile Poirier — Gatineau LW
Red Line’s favourite sleeper in the entire draft. Hard-driving winger has much more puck skill and offensive imagination than he gets credit for, and is constantly improving. Dramatic increase in speed, leg strength, and skating power. Rangy with soft hands and sees the ice well; creative passer and unselfish with the puck. Good vision and playmaking abilities. Has to create his own openings on a team without much help, and does so consistently. Bulls his way to net with checkers draped all over his back and still gets away danger- ous shots. Great release on heavy wrister. Very good hockey sense. Power player creates space for linemates. Competes his bag off every shift and is his team’s heart and soul, contributing in every conceiv- able facet. Coaches throw him out in every key situation - logs huge minutes and shows great stamina, getting stronger as the game goes on. Instinctive and understands different game situations.
Projection: Intense, 2nd line power winger for strong club. Style compares to: Erik Cole

When I watch those hilight videos, that's the first player that came to mind. Lecavlier during his early years.

It would have been a great story for the Calgary kid to come as the 22nd pick, but I like the picking quality people that can play hockey.

I am willing to see how they pan out before losing my noodle. We got out guy at #6 and everyone else is gravy. Hope we can make some good selections in our later round picks.

The sports people in Ottawa seem really high on the guy, they probably know more a bit more about him than the rest of us do as well. I hope they are right.
