I look at it this way, we get younger and bigger, but if Jones has a bounce back year he can be a deadline deal to someone else for a better pick next year than Tangs would have gotten us this year.
We are a soft team to play against and this will help even if for just one year.
This forum is so eff'd some times. People bitched and complained that the Flames were small, old and soft. They get younger, bigger and tougher and they still complain
Next season is a wash anyhow, I really don't expect the Flames to finish higher than 25 or so to me it's no big deal that a disinterested player and an aging player are out the door.
The hope here is that Jones can maybe find some chemistry with someone and regain his old form. With regard to SOB, Flames need some bitterness (might be stupidity at times) in front of the net...SOB brings that.
Yeah, we need to add size but it's at what cost and for hopefully good value. If we flipped Cammy for John Scott, we just got almost a foot and 60 pounds bigger but it's terrible value.
SportsnetSpec Love the trade for Calgary. Getting younger the key here. Tanguay and Sarich, time to move on for both. Jones better than stats show

TSNJFranklin #Flames suddenly become a harder team to play against. Grit was much needed for the Flames. Feaster is a gamer I'll give him that much

RogMillions #Flames acquire Shane O'Brien and David Jones from Colorado for Alex Tanguay and Cory Sarich. Flames get bigger and younger.

It would have been better to trade Tanguay for a bag of pucks, but at least we got bigger and tougher, plus Tanguay is a cancer. That Jones contract sucks though.
I get feeling a lot of folks on this board aren't aware of the ages of the players they follow and how performance declines with age. Tanguay is 33. Jones is 28. Sarich is 34. O'Brien is 29.
In two seasons Jones will be scoring more than Tanguay and Sarich will be retired.
This is the kind of deal rebuilding teams make.
Jones is declining faster than Tanguay and he is hardly young. He'll be just as old as Tangs when this team is competitive again but contributing a lot less while making more money.
Seems like a lateral move to me. Trading a LW (of which we have lot's) for a RW (for which we have few) is a positive. his shooting percentage was way down last year so I won't fret over it since it's likely to experience some positive regression. Doesn't produce like Tanguay produced though.
O'Brien... meh, Sarich... meh.
I give this trade a tentative thumb in the middle.
How much potential does Jones really have? He will be 29 by the start of the season.
A $4 million cap hit until 2016 for a 29 year old that scored more than 20 goals twice.
Cap hit isn't going to be a consideration for the Flames for the next three seasons. Eating a bad contract is what allowed us to make this deal. Do you really think anyone would give up something of value for Tanguay (also a bad contract, and 33 years old) otherwise?

To add to your post, the Flames may have needed an overpriced contract to stay above the floor of the salary cap.
I'd rather have a young big player who wants to play than an old slowing player who wants out.
