|
I wouldn't expect so. I'm sure the Flames got in touch with Daktronics the second they knew the control room was wiped out. It wouldn't be an overnight process, but three months and some extra $ to account for the emergency nature of the replacement should be plenty.

I think the big difference between the MSG transformation and the Saddledome flooding is that MSG was fully planned and organized well in advance of the work being done, and all of the materials will have been ordered and ready when they were needed.
I have no doubt that they'll have the labour available to get the work done on restoring the Saddledome, the only question is whether they'll be able to get replacement materials in time.

This has to put a heck of a spanner in the new arena plans. Some of he money earmarked for that will have to be diverted here.
Too bad they can't do a major structural reno to the dome - build it up upgrade roof. Surely some of the bones can be reused? Use this as an opportunity to fix up and modernize the dome to current league standards.

Certainly that's an issue, but the project at MSG was also much larger, and filled with a ton of logistical issues that wouldn't be present in Calgary. It's certainly not the same thing, but it provides an example of what is possible.

I'm not sure this will impact the new arena plans at all. It seems that insurance will likely cover the vast majority of the bill, so it shouldn't impact the finances all that considerably.
As for simply upgrading the Dome, that would be a very lengthy and costly process, which most likely require either multiple off seasons of shut downs or a temporary relocation. That made sense at MSG, where the precise location was crucial (although fairly contentious locally), but makes little sense for the Flames who are not only not tied to the precise location, but reportedly looking to step away from the Stampede board.

A friend of mine works for a recruiting company that's helping to hire temp workers for Saddledome restoration. I just saw an ad posted asking for applications. The job term is two months so take that for what it's worth. Who knows if that restoration means 100% ready for play or if there is still work to be done after that.

Is this from the flames in a press release?

Here are reasons why the New Orleans Hornets (now Pelicans) moved from their home arena to Oklahoma City. I did not realize that the arena was a medical centre during the natural disaster.
"Following Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005, medical operations that had previously been housed in the Superdome were moved to the Arena. Medical personnel had been working in an area of the Superdome with poor lighting, leaking ceilings and soggy carpet. The Arena's design was tested in 1996 by CPP, a wind engineering consulting firm, so it fared far better than the Superdome during the storm and was in better condition to house sensitive medical operations. Thus, unlike the Superdome, the Arena reopened to activities only one month after the storm.
Because of the catastrophic devastation brought by Hurricane Katrina upon the communities of southeastern Louisiana, the Hornets franchise temporarily relocated its base of operations to Oklahoma City in 2005–06 and 2006–07, posting records of 38–44 and 39–43 respectively. During this time, the franchise was known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. In these two seasons, the vast majority of home games were played at the Ford Center in Oklahoma City, while a few remained at New Orleans Arena."

Of course I still believe the Saddledome will be ready in time, but I do have a concern about other locations.
Would the Flames be allowed to play in Lethbridge or Red Deer with neither of those cities having a major airport? Obviously Saskatoon and Edmonton have the airport facillities required (OK, technically Leduc does.) Or would Red Deer qualify as they are almost as close to YEG as the city of Edmonton is?

That's good news. Lots of home owners are finding that insurance does not cover over land flooding, just sewer backup. Heart breaking for them.

I know in 2007 for training camp, the Oilers charter had no problem landing at the Grande Prairie airport. I would think that Red Deer and Lethbridge would both have no issues as well accommodating team charters.

Lethbridge will have no problem with team charters as they have long enough runways (5500 and 6500 ft). Red deer should be fine for all but the largest planes as they have a 5500 ft runway too.

Worth noting that Lethbridge's airport is a airport of entry as well, meaning it can accept air traffic from the US. But yeah, the 15,000 seat arena to the east will beat the closer, 5,000 seat arena to the south. If you're going to consider Lethbridge, just play at COP instead.

Lethbridge should be able to handle it. I can't imagine the charter being any bigger than some of the aircraft that come to Lethbridge for their Airshow every year.
