If true I wonder what shanahans role is.
Dohbiggen knows king is not head of hockey ops but will never pass up a shot at king or ownership.

That's why I think any speculation that this will mean Feaster's departure is unlikely. I can understand that they can't hire Shanahan officially until after the playoffs are over because of his role with the League, but that doesn't mean they'd keep Feaster around just to keep the seat warm, and I don't think they would have had him address the media today.
Once you know you're going to take away the keys, you take away the keys, even if you don't have someone ready to hand them to.

Oh, Calgary.
Shanny?
Hopefully he's got more free will than he did at the NHL head office.
I don't think he will though. "Marching Orders."
Anything but Jay Feaster at this point is a positive. Anything that gets Ken King away from hockey ops is a positive. Anything that shuts ownership up in regards to hockey ops is a positive.
Wait and see. Wait and see.
Early speculation: Shanny is a guy who can be leaned on by his higher ups, something that other, potentially more competent managers (Burke), would not react positively to.

Shannahan. Eeeeghhhh. A great player and a HOF career and then a terrible tenure as the NHL disciplinarian (with a pit stop in business development).
This seems... desperate.

Feaster has missed the play-offs every year, brought the team to 6th last in the league (and a Jimmy Howard brainfart of bottom 3), has this team set up with arguably the worst talent under 25 (definitely bottom 3), a prospect base with 0 elite prospects and tough to find one blue chip prospect and has been the joke of the league/embarrassment to fans for at least the last 8 months.
That is nowhere near to a halfway decent job and especially not when compared to the much more successful predecessor.

Have you suffered short term memory loss? Who traded all of our 2nds with the exception of 2003 and 2008? Maybe that's why we have a crappy prospect base? You can't turn around a franchise in 2 1/2 years and fully restock the cupboards after a decade of neglect.
Is Feaster perfect - no. But he has made positive steps in getting the organization set up in terms of scouting and development. Good enough to warrant more time to implement his plan.

So change for the sake of change. Have you ever managed before? How are the Flames going to attract good people when they aren't giving the time needed to turn the franchise around?
Edwards seems to run the team like it's the oilpatch or Jimmy Pattison's car lot. Results are important, but hard for people to succeed when they are always looking over their shoulder waiting for the shoe to drop.

Sounds like Shanahan becomes president of the Calgary Flames hockey team, wont be announced until after the season though as he still has his commitment to the NHL.
Fan of the move, Shanahan is a smart hockey guy and has lots of connections and is respected.

I don't know. Beats a newspaper guy. What could King bring to a hockey meeting that Shanahan couldn't better?

I remember those 2nds being traded and it being worth it. I'll take trading a 2nd for Kipper over trading one for Byron any day of the week.
A quick way to build up a prospect base is to trade valuable assets on a crap team and not hold onto them when it is clear the team is poor.
I don't expect us to be winning cups and have the top prospect base but I also don't expect to be the franchise in the worst situation in the league in terms of the combo of roster/prospects, much worse off than when Feaster took over and the joke of the league.
Feaster made one or two mediocre/neutral moves and a bunch of awful moves. He has shown nothing positive in his time here.

Not change for changes sake change because the guys running the show are doing an awful job.
You attract good people by offering them one of 30 GM jobs in the NHL and with a team that has shown it is willing to spend to the cap. Firing Feaster et al shows you don't want crap and care about winning good people will want to come to Calgary. Biggest thing holding them back would be the awful team/prospects Feaster has left them with.

Who knows if anyone loses their job.
Shanahan may not be the best NHL disciplinarian (it seems nobody is), but why not give him a shot in Calgary in an upper management role?
More hockey minds can't hurt. It's not like he's going to come in and trade Baertschi, Gaudreau, and the 6th overall pick.

Shrug. Shanahan has proven absolutely zero when it comes to hockey management. I think Yzerman is terrible too but at least he got some seasoning under Holland in Detroit.
There were other, better, more experienced names available - Davidson and Nill namely. Now either the Flames are so unappealing of a franchise that they can't attract experienced talent and have to resort to wild swings at former inexperienced NHLers or upper level management doesn't have the balls to fix a mistake when they have a chance and continue on with status quo.

The Flames are not looked at in a good light by the rest of the league and media. This organization has embarrassed itself over the past few seasons and I'm pretty sure that any changes will be looked at in a positive light by the rest of the hockey world.

Davidson and Nill are hired so why cry over spilt milk? Sure they would have been great but for reasons we will never know it's not going to happen with Calgary. Shanahan hasn't proven anything but King and Co. have proven they aren't up to the task. Time to move on and you either get a retread or a guy that could be a bright new mind. Shanahan has insight to the goings on of the NHL and I don't feel he would be nearly as unprepared as you seem to think.
