It doesn't have to be star players. Role-players like Peplinski, Hunter, and McCrimmon set the tone of that team as much as the stars. Peplinski was a glue guy on the '89 team because he was outgoing and got on well with the veterans, the europeans, and the younger players. Lowry played much the same role on the '04 team.
That's one of the reasons I never bought the idea that the Flames needed to keep Iginla around to mentor younger players. First of all, he apparently isn't the kind of guy to take younger players under his wing. That's a personality thing. Some guys have it, others don't. Then there's the fact that mentors don't have to be stars. Lowry was Iginla's mentor. Colin Patterson probably taught Roberts a thing or two about being a pro. Stempniak seems like the guy who plays that role on the Flames. Mentorship doesn't have much to do with on-ice talent.
