Hockey is great but listening to same news and opinions makes me want to smash my head against my car window. Pat Steinberg is worst for repeating opinions.
I love tons of sport and like good informative talk about it which is why I don't like Rome.

Plenty of ways for people in Calgary to get good sports talk that covers a wide range of sports without listening to the garbage that is Jim Rome.

I'm not in a position to listen to lunch hour so I can't fairly comment on it. That said, I'd rather have them repeat the morning show from 10-12 than have Rome. There isn't any other programming to pick up during this time? Material from GTA or something? I don't mind NBA/MLB talk, but at least focus on Canadian teams.

I listen to the morning show everyday and I love Rhett. He is very honest and it's fun listening to him learn the ropes of being in sports radio. I also love when the morning guys get in trouble in other media outlets, but I can't expect that all the time.

I most look forward Friedman's segment, and enjoy Duhatschek's/Als East/West segment - however I feel those two would better serve listeners being on the radio separately. They don't really argue or debate... it's just like doing two interviews at once and only getting half the thoughts from each person.

And for the record, I would love to have Loubardias on the FAN960 full time. I don't care when, but I appreciate his knowledge.

Obviously Pat Steins is doing a great job, and I'm growing on his partner too. Very objective and unbiased analysis from those two.

I think all the hate for too much hockey talk will die down when CFL/NFL start up again.

Great job FAN960!

P.S. - I'll also voice my interest for more soccer talk... maybe have a guest on once a week talking EPL and other Canadian soccer news? Surely they have 10 minutes a week for that.
Loubardias is great if you like listening to At the end of the day starting every sentence for hours on end.

I'm going to disagree with you on this one. You get out exactly what you put in and to be honest, they haven't really given it much of an effort.

The way they have injected the Blue Jays talk this year into the station is actually a success story IMHO. They get a couple of quality, passionate analysts (especially Zaun), at least one guy (Walker) who is a huge fan and it does wonders for the brand.

I would also wager that this decision came from Toronto, and not the guy who decided that putting 2 CFL players on the air, then using that as some sort of barometer to measure the fact that "960 listeners aren't interested in other sports".

You get some name brand NFL analyst talent showing up on the air, some decent interviews and at least one host who is passionate about it - it can work.

I feel that The Jim Rome Show provides plenty of good informative talk about a variety of sports and current events; just because you declare otherwise does not constitute proof or evidence that it doesn't or that it is garbage. You declare it as a fact rather than an opinion.

Stop being such a blowhard brother

Where did I declare anything as fact?

I said in this thread that if you like Jim Rome then good for you.

But the people that have a vested interest in putting on shows that people in their listening area want to listen have done research and spent time finding out that Rome is not high on the listeners list of things they want to hear.

I would argue otherwise and as evidence I would submit that the show is on the air for 2 hours every day.

I am no baseball fan at all, but I've gotta say, I caught a piece of Zaun the other day and quite enjoyed him. Mostly because I care about how the athletes "work" together (or not) and he was talking about the Lawrie antics of a few days ago -- the human dynamic is fascinating, and Zaun brought us "up close and personal" with it.

There is certainly a market for it but considering that they just cut 1 hour of a 3 hour show it seems hard to argue that there is a strong desire for listeners in the FAN 960 region to listen to it. If there was they would not have cut the last hour out.

I went for a walk in the rain tonight, I swear I must have been hit by lightning.

Spoiler!

On subject, especially this time of year Rome sucks bad, hoops, hoops and more poops, I can't stand every time he has a black athlete on he feels the need to talk like he's from the hood himself if you know what I mean bro's and ho's.

I'll listen a bit during NFL season but that's it, I would rather listen to Toronto or Vancouver radio to be honest

Ryan Leslie is better than Bryn, but doesn't seem to add much. It seems the guy that does the big show with Pat just tries to be irritating and stir the pot as opposed to adding anything substantial. Rob Kerr was one guy who Pat seemed to respect and could offer actual insightful comments and analysis.

Kerr used to chew Pat a new one every once in a while.

Are you are talking about Chevy and Nasty here? What a bush league, brutal show. 300 lb poetry made me cringe to the point that I had to turn it off.

I am sure that they could conceive a better CFL show no?

I do understand those who do not like Rome. Perhaps you don't like fresh takes, good interviews, and clone humor. However, it is undeniable that the programming on that station has gone downhill, and the hockey central guys are pretty brutal. It's all recycled opinions, inside and non-funny jokes, and now with even MORE Leafs talk. That doesn't even take into account the state of their afternoon programming.

Anyhow, as people have pointed out, plenty of other ways to listen to Rome, and you can listen to the fan as much or as little as you want based on what you like or don't like. Kirch would have me believe that their ratings are through the roof and some of the highest in the country. I'm not sure if I believe him entirely, but it's definitely possible. Bland and unoriginal stuff seems to sell pretty well these days.

I actually think the second best thing the fan has next to Rome these days is this Farrell on the Bench guy. I really like his commentary, and he covers a unique array of topics with good takes.

Listening to guys like that and then listening to Ryan say to Pat, "so, the guys on hockey central were discussing who has the pressure on them now, Chicago or Detroit, what do you think?"
"Well umm, I think Chicago definitely does, but Detroit does too, so I guess I would say both."
"Completely disagree Pat, I think Detroit has all the pressure on now, but I suppose Chicago does too. I would have to say they both do."

Beyond when they get Friedman and Duha on, it is mindless unintelligent dribble.

your take sucked!

Anyone else already had their fill of Kypreos and MacLean? It's only one hour a day but man it feels like torture listening to their opinions daily. Maybe the Easterners like these guys but I feel at times like I'm listening to Cro-Magon radio listening to these two go back and forward. The icing on the cake was when they has P.J. Stock on a few days ago. It was the trifecta of neanderthal hockey personalities.

The Rome Show's weird, its all inside jokes. I loved him 10 years ago, you have to listen pretty much every day to get it. I stopped listening for a few years, and whenever I'd just catch a random episode I'd think it was stupid, and wonder why I even used to like it. Then I started listening daily again and it got hilarious again, its weird that way. I'll admit he has lost a step, but that's pretty normal for shows with a shelf life as long as his.

I will say though that even when I was a big Rome fan, I always haaated the Clones. Maybe if it was just a spur of the moment battle of wits, it would be good. But you can tell most were up until 2am preparing it. And they all just try to copy Rome's style, its so corny. I actually get embarassed for them sometimes and have to flip the channel. I'd always skip Smackoff day.

Also nothing wrong with something other than hockey talk on a sports station, especially in the off-season. Team 1260 in Edmonton is much worse than Fan 960 for this. Even in July/August during Eskies season, its just Oilers Oilers Oilers. It sucks.

I don't like Kerr to much on Sportsnet for the play by play, but whenever he comes back and sits in as a guest on 960 he comes across really well. He is a natural on the radio.
I hope that Walker does away with the sarcastic player skit. It is not funny at all and It almost always bit the Flames in the a##.
But i do like the "this sucks" routine or whatever its called.
Retro is great to listen to. Boomer and Walker for the most part i don't mind.
Sometimes i feel their as a Anti Flames and Stamps agenda with those 2 at times.
I get the feeling they are Canuck fans.
Pat and Ryan in the afternoon i think their back and forth is pretty good and they are both sports savvy, i get the sense genuine local fans.
