Cundari plays 25 min as his first NHL game and didn't look at all out of place. Very impressed with this young guy.
His first goal was a bonus, what a snipe on that shot.
I noticed he wasn't afraid to let slap shots go from the point either. Many rookies shy away from that. I really like what the future has for Cundari with the Flames.

Anybody question whether we should pencil Cundari a NHL roster spot now?

Wideman, Gio, Brodie, Smith, Cundari, ???, ??? should all have spots

I would love to see 1 spot open for Breen to fight for. Sarich has a contract next year. And Butler a RFA. Fill in your 2 of 3.

He certainly showed major promise in his first game. Imagine if that's just a taste of what he'll turn out to be.

One game and he looked good. He speaks of consistency being what keeps players in the big leagues. He will have to at least demonstrate that over the rest of the games and into training camp for next season.

I hope he turns out to be like Theoren Fleury but on Defense. A feisty undersized player who has what it takes to compete against bigger guys in the NHL.

when we acquired Cundari I told everyone we got a "player" just like Gio. Regardless of whether he was drafted or not, he is a solid young guy and good on Feaster et al for getting him. Flames fans are gonna love this guys compete level.

Got a good feeling about him, he may not be very tall but he's a well built kid with some swagger it seems.

As much as I like Sarich and what he brings to the room, I would like to see something like this for the start of camp:

Wideman, Giordano, Brodie, Smith, Cundari, Butler, Carson, Breen

Whoever ends up in the #8 spot heads to the Heat as the first call up.

For this to happen though, Sarich would have to be traded or bought out. Personally, I think he has enough value to be traded to a playoff team that wants extra depth.

Yes, I totally question that. He has one NHL game under his belt. It's crazy to think he's assured a spot. He'll have to fight it out for a roster spot (pending trades & UFA signings). As of right now he's probably set to compete for one open spot (Probably with Breen)... and that's assuming that they Flames don't go hunting for D on the free agent market.

Flames desperately need a big shutdown type guy. That group will just get thrown around by bigger forwards.

And no - I don't consider Breen that guy.

This picture just happened to be in The Windsor Star today, in an article talking about Eric Wellwood's recent injury. Here is Cundari, with Hall and Wellwood.

Awesome seeing Sven joke about being wide open but Cundari ignored him and roofed it.

Although its only one game, Cundari looked about as good as you could ever imagine. He seems to have tons of character and will fit in nicely with guys like Backlund, Brodie, Sven, Horak etc...

I'm sure Cundari already let Hall know that he's going to do just that.

Easy there, tiger. It's one game.

Certainly showed a lot of promise, if he can maintain it for the next 3 games and into training camp next season, I will be inclined to agree with you. As it stands now, it's far too early to be making that statement.

One game, especially a players first game, is too small of a sample.

That being said, wow. He hits, he can shoot and he can move the puck up ice. If he continues to perform, at even the level of his first game, he will be a contributing member of the team IMO. If he can make some improvements, the Flames have a top 4 d-man going forward.

#Flames FYI: Cundari's 24:54 of ice last night? A new franchise record for most ice time in a Flames skater's #NHL debut!

Calgary Flames@NHLFlames17m

The previous high was set by Dion Phaneuf on Oct. 5, 2005 when he logged 24:10 of ice time.

Victor Hedman apparently holds the record:

Mark Cundari's 24:34 TOI was highest 1st Gm as Flame. Victor Hedman performed over 26 mins in his 1st GM to hold honors for TOI for TB in 09
