I would be perfectly fine with them using Young Guns again.

I'm not sure the last young guns era would have turned out so badly had Button not made some horrible trades. The majority of the main players promoted by the Flames went on to have decent years in Calgary and some excellent careers.

Just imagine that our 2003/04 team could have potentially also has Cory Stillman, Marc Savard & Derek Morris.

Some of the top picks like Tkaczuk & Fata may have bombed but those teams actually had some good young NHLers. They were just ####ed by piss poor management, a string of horrible coaches and a Canadian dollar that didn't allow the Flames to buy (or retain) free agent talent to keep competitive.

Stillman was trade for Conroy (key on our cup run) + 7th rounder (Moss). A fine trade.

Morris+Shantz+Dubinksy was traded for Chris Drury+Stephane Yelle which was also a fine trade. IMO the bad trade was the later Drury for Reinprecht/Warrener.

Button did have a good trade with Nazarov + 2nd for Leopold.

So the 2003/04 team could have had Filip Kuba, Martin St. Louis, Chris Drury and JS Giguere had Button done things differently and the Canadian dollar not been so bad.

Fantasy land!

I think Conroy could have been had for less than Stillman personally. Yes the trade worked out well for us, but no one knew Conroy would turn into the player he did for Calgary. Stillman however was injury prone but starting to show the player he was going to become.

I also think the Drury trade was a mistake. He never wanted to be in Calgary, it was pretty obvious from the start. I personally would have preferred to keep Morris and find other ways to acquire Yelle.

There were tons of things that could have been done to make the last rebuild quicker if there were different people at the helm.

But you are right it is fantasy land.

However I was just stating reasons why I personally wouldn't be bothered by young guns. Quite frankly they are going to be called that by the media anyways since every team in a youth movement has their young players referred to as young guns.
