With our luck the Oilers will probably win the lottery; if that happens I'll probably end up hanging myself in the shower.

Not really.

There's a 58% chance one of the 1-3 teams wins the lottery, which would keep the Flames in 4th. There's also a 10.7% chance they would win the lottery and pick first. So, there'd only be a 31.3% chance they'd drop down to 5th.

Because those 3 are a clear tier below the top 3. Considering Feaster gave up Iginla and Bouwmeester to tank, not getting one of those top 3 guys is like putting salt in the wound of probably the worst season in Flames history.

I understand, we all want a top 3 pick. But we should be looking at the second tier players just in case we do miss out on the big three. That's all i was really trying to say.

Personally, I'd be happy with any of the top 4 forwards. Drouin, Mckinnon Barkov and Lindholm are all good. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

I just meant with their luck it would be the worst possibly scenario, Oilers win the lottery and we pick 5th

Would you take Jones over any of them....all of them?

I wouldn't take Jones unless the other 4 guys are off the board.

You can just as easily find defensemen that can become top pairing guys in the middle/end of the first round as you can near the top.

Defensemen seem to be similar to goalies in that their draft position doesn't necessarily equate to end product talent. Keith, Seabrook, Weber, Schultz, Letang, Goligoski, Brodie, Giordano, Shattenkirk, Green, Subban, Chara, Martin, Z. Michalek, Erik Karlsson and many many other defensemen were all taken with the #14 pick in the draft or later. Because of that, I wouldn't place as much emphasis on addressing the D core with our first pick, especially when we have 3 picks in the first round.

With our first pick, I'd rather go with a forward that has elite upside instead. It is vastly more difficult to find first line forwards after the top 5 picks. Usually there's only one or two really good forwards in each draft in the 15-30 zone with usually a few serviceable 2nd/3rd liners.

In 04, only Wolski and Zajac were notable
In 05, Hanzal, Cogliano, Oshie, and Downie
In 06. Chris Stewart, Giroux, Berglund, and Foligno
In 07, Pacioretti, Perron, and Backlund
In 08, Eberle and Ennis
In 09, Kreider, Josefson, Johansson, Caron and Palmeri

After that, it's a little harder to tell as there hasn't been enough of a sample size with those guys as most are rookies or not in the NHL.

Unless you happen to get lucky and there's an Eberle, or Giroux available, you aren't likely going to get a star player with those later picks, so if we can get a star calibre (or even just a decent first liner) with our first pick, it makes more sense to try for that.

Interesting. I would take a projected franchise D....plays more minutes. Especially if he is the the best player, projected. Just my opinion.

I don't get the logic, Iginla was gone at the end of the year for nothing, Jbo was a buyout candidate a few months ago, 2 first rounders plus prospects is pretty good. It's not like tanking was a choice that Feaster decided upon.

I would take Jones as well. That being said, I hope whoever picks first takes Jones and leaves Mackinnon or Barkov for the Flames.

Monahan or Lindholm if they end up picking out of the top 3, somehow.

That's the crazy thing, you either win the draft, or you drop another position. It's one or the other.

Knowing that, you've got to finish top 2, or hope to win the lottery. Anything else will be a disappointment.
Which is why it blows my mind when guys are wanting the Flames to lose overall and pick high, yet pick certain games where they want the flames to win for various reasons. "I want them to get a high pick, but I just can't stand losing to the Canucks, so hopefully they kick their ass!!"

Umm, okay great, except the chances of us picking in the top 3 are really low with the teams we're battling against. To me, it's one or the other, either you're cheering for the Flames to win every game because you don't believe in cheering for you team to lose (which is fine), or you're cheering for a top 2/3 pick and you want them to lose every game (which is also fine), but it's kind of one or the other. Cheering for losses most of the time and wins sometimes is just so weird to me.
