Meh, Maclean has Ottawa playing great with smoke and mirrors...it isn't Hartley's fault, but his isn't getting more out the team either.

Let's put it this way:

Coaching isn't doing this team many favors at the moment.

I am very much of the opinion that Iggy is, and has been for a number of years, a coach killer. He has resisted buying into coaches philosophies, and because he is the captain, and has such an iconic status, he negatively influences younger players (intentional or not).

I really think if they trade Iginla, you will see a huge turnaround from the rest of the team next season right out of the gate.

So no, I don't think coaching is the biggest problem, I think egos of some players are.

but Hartley was brought in to get the most of his "star" players. Trading Iggy would take away one of his stars and his coaching style would suffer because of it.

Can we all agree that this team is just bad in every category?

I don't think Iggy has necessarily resisted what coaches want, I just think he's not physically and mentally capable of being on his game 100% of the time. You do see Iggy coming back occasionally to back check and support the defence.

You are right about him setting the tone for other players. He's just become so big on this team that other players do look at him as an example and if the young players see that he's not back checking or supporting, then they may think that's acceptable. Unfortunately, these other players have to realize that Iggy is old and can't be busting his ass back checking every shift, he's just not physically and mentally capable anymore.

The team desperately needs another forward to lead. I was really hoping that Bourque and Glencross could be that guy, but they clearly aren't capable. Someone needs to step up and say, "well just because Iggy isn't doing that, doesn't mean that I shouldn't", but instead everyone just follows the lead.

I think you are right that if Iginla is moved, the whole leadership dynamic in the room will change. Someone else will have to step up and lead and hopefully that person is still physically and mentally capable of setting an good example for the majority of the time.

What's the point? They had Kipper all of 05-06 and finished with 103 points as the division champs...they s**t the bed hard in the playoffs...a fun tradition for the flames. The team playing the best going into the playoffs generally does well, miracle run or not, no matter where they are in the standings. Finishing the season strong typically equates to a decent playoff run.
