Even if you draft one, you still eventually have to pay them or say bye-bye.

Drafting a #1 centre is difficult, and keeping them through UFA eligibility and into the 2nd half of their prime is equally as hard and damn near impossible if you don't pay them at 10-12% of your cap.

Bingo. I think in that situation they would probably trade him. Most teams probably would in the same situation, expect that one team we all know and love of course

As for who is the better player, coming into their contract years? Debatable might I might go with Richards. Can see going with Getzlaf too.
Richards' contract also comes with a $17M cap penalty when he retires though (assuming he doesn't play until he's 40):

Thats a steep cap number. Look at Iggys 7 mil as an example. Looked good when he first signed, however now he isnt worth 7 million. 5.5 maybe.

Looks like this past lockout was a waste of time. The insanity continues.

I don't remember too many people thinking it looked that good at the time. The NHL was between mega stars at the time and Iginla held out in order to set a new standard for upper tier players. It was a lot at the time.

He's done fairly well at living up to it though.

That's insane. 8.25million a year, wow. No discount? What a ###### to be honest. Wonder what Selanne is now thinking about him, the guy who always has played with a discount in Anaheim.

Than why did a team like Nashville hold onto Dan Hamhuis back in 2009 as they were essentially fighting for 8th place that year? Forget the Nashville drafts and develops arguement....they held a player that they were unable to sign and did not get maximum value for him. When was the last time a team inside the playoff top 8 at the deadline sold a player off?

Outside the playoff picture is a different story, but also remember that trading players with NTC's during the season is not the same as trading a guy with no trade blocking rights either. That's what gets me about those who always say Iginla should have been traded 4 years ago at the deadline. Where is the logic in that thought process?

What? This contract would be even more if it wasn't for the lockout.

This is manageable, and contracts like these will only go up as revenue rise. That's the cost for the most important player on your team.

Get used to this....you can't fudge cap hits anymore with absurdly long contracts. Take the first 8 years of any contract from the previous CBA and average those salary's over that term and there would be a lot more 8-9 million dollar cap hits in the league. The second tier level guys who have been getting 4.5-5 million are likely going to have to start settling for 3.5 instead because star players won't be playing for 6.5 million dollar cap hits anymore.

wow, was expecting a 7mill/year range salary.

Can the ducks even afford to be in the perry sweepstakes now? If they are, you can bet bobby ryan is being traded before the draft.

I don't know why people are so surprised. Yeah 8.25 is high but that's where the market is right now for centres. What was anahiem supposed to do not sign him? Trade him and start rebuilding? If they offered him 6 or 7 million a season he would have laughed and waited a few months and got 8 million on the ufa market.

Until all owners and GMs agree not to offer these types of contacts or the NHL steps in and limits dollar amounts, contracts are just going to get higher and higher. When Malkin or Stamkos hit the market, their going to be 12 to 15 million dollar players.

Well that's the contract he signed with the Rangers. Timbit is suggesting the Flames offered him the exact same one. None of us know what Feaster offered Richards so we're kind of debating blind here, aren't we?

i think people are just surprised that the cap is going DOWN next season, yet the price for a #1 Center seems to have gone up.

Selanne makes four and a half million dollars this season and he's got that nifty no movement clause. It's amazing what Teemu is doing at his age.. but he ain't doing it for charity.
