How did you get the free year? I've been paying for it!

When I called in, they said I could have a watch put on my SIN # for 5 years which I did. I then signed up for Equifax and Transunion. There was no mention of it being free. I didn't hear about it being free until well after that (and never actually heard details), but was already signed up.

One is $15/mo, the other is $30. Don't remember which is which.

Yep, me and the wife just got our letters today too. Seems like all you lose are the legal fees which are only assessed if we win. Can be up to a 1/3 of the total settlement....which is crazy considering this includes over 500,000 plaintiffs.

Hmmm, well my memory is fuzzy, but in addition to the SIN #, I believe there was something for a year with 1 of the credit monitoring companies. A watch or alert of suspicious activity or something.
And I remember it working, I set up a cell phone under my name or did something to a cell plan, and the cell company made me go in person with ID because of the alert on my file.

Got the email. Looks like everybody, unless seriously affected, gets $60.

Does the settlement apply to me?
The settlement applies to all persons whose personal information was contained on an external hard drive in the control of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (now known as Employment and Social Development Canada) or the National Student Loan Services Centre, which was allegedly lost on or around November 5, 2012. If your information was contained on that hard drive and you did not opt out of the class action, you are a class member. You may have received a letter from the government advising you that your personal information was contained on the external hard drive. You do not need to have received a letter, or kept the letter, to be a class member.
