Tweet from @neiltyson: The "Edge of Space" jump: A corresponding fall to a schoolroom globe begins 1 millimeter above its surface. I'm just saying.

Perspective can be a downer sometimes.

This event went from interesting to inspiring. At least to me.

Makes you realize how small we really are.
Doesn't really diminish the effect for me though.

Here is the full quote before he jumped:

Alright now, the whole world is watch now.

I wish you could see, what I can see.

Sometimes you have to get up really high to understand how small you are.

I’m going home now.

Yes, anything can look small.

Thanks for posting this...couldn't understand a single word he was saying before he jumped.

Also, the perspective is interesting on how small it is relatively speaking, but it also makes me realize how tenuous our atmosphere appears to be as well.

On the drive-in sports talk show on Fan960 this a.m., one of the announcers was skeptical . . .

"Seriously, what did he really do besides step off a platform and fall to the ground?" What's the big deal with that? What did he accomplish?"

I don't think he was trying to be funny.

I stumbled upon the broadcast yesterday and was amazed I spent the 2 hours watching the whole thing unfold - pretty cool moment.

It actually made me choose a RedBull today at the store.

That was Andrew Walker. He can be such a loser sometimes. He really pissed me off this morning.

Andrew Walker would have not survived that jump. Felix is a pro jumper and he almost died, so yeah I'd say it was fairly impressive and a very daring feat.

Just out of curiousity, did we gain any kind of valuable knowledge from this? If somehow, this jump will have practical applications, then it is definitely commendable. If it was just for money and fame, then it is kind of vain... but that is what people like.

More than the actual jump, I was impressed that he could come pretty close to landing where he wanted to.

Red Bull Stratos is an opportunity to gather information that could contribute to the development of life-saving measures for astronauts and pilots – and maybe for the space tourists of tomorrow,” Baumgartner said in a statement. “Proving that a human can break the speed of sound in the stratosphere and return to earth would be a step toward creating near-space bailout procedures that currently don’t exist.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but the person who designed the suit, Shane Jacobs, is a Calgarian and St. Bonaventure Alumnus. He then went to McGill and MIT.

One key challenge for Mr. Baumgartner was having a pressurized suit that was manoeuvrable enough for a skydiver. It was created for him by Canadian engineer Shane Jacobs.

would've been epic to see how far he would've ended up if his suit behaved like those wingsuits base jumpers wear these days.

Sounds like Walker, this guy is really starting to piss me off. Always so negative of other people. And everything of value that other people do is 'easy' or 'pointless'.

The incredibly rare one-year-to-the-date bump. Nice work

His record has been broken. Alan Eustace made the jump from 135,890 feet.
