I was at the Grey Cup in Edmonton in 2010. I went up to get beer about 10 minutes before half time. I detoured to the men's washroom and came apon a middle-aged, fairly over-weight dude in the midst of a chest-buster with what looked like his son or grandson (5 or 6 years old) standing there, helpless, tears streaming down his face. Some fans were there trying to help and someone ran off to find medical. Paramedics arrived and where doing what they could for the guy but it was obvious he was in major trouble. The paper the next day reported that the guy died. Easily the saddest thing I have witnessed in my life.

When I was about 8 I walked up to the local high school to watch the baseball game. The sky wasn't particularly cloudy but there was a couple big rain clouds. It started to sprinkle a little bit then there was a big flash. Pitcher got struck by lighting in the top of his cap while his cleat was touching the spike that held the rubber to the mound. Back then the uniforms were made of a polyester like material and there were clearly melted parts and he was literally smoking. The entire infield was knocked down.
Boy later died of his injuries and they named the field after him.

Was that the boy who died at Optimist park during a babe ruth league game? I remember that memorial from when I played babe ruth. So sad, it happened a year or two before I started in that league and everyone was so nervious any time lightening was even seen that they would cancel games because of it.

When I was camping at 8 a trailer blew up inside from the propane stove. The walls actually burst outwards a foot and bent along the seam.
The people inside were all going to live but they has serious burns and their skin was split open like a hotdog overcooked. The mother, who lit the stove, had a foot long broken bubble of burnt flesh on her thigh.
The ugly part was when people were helping and asking for blankets for them. They asked my dad for a blanket and us kids were going to get some and our dad said "no don't bother" and had us all walk away.

I watched a huge RV (brand new, dealer plates) lane change into a cyclist. The cyclist didn't die according to the papers, but watching him go under the rear wheels really sticks with me. I called in the 911 and was ready to give first aid but luckily a doctor stopped.
I was also first on the scene of a car that hit a deer on the TCH just west of Kananaskis. The deer went into the windshield, driver was bleeding from his ears when I got there. He was very calm, but his family was freaking out and screaming. Kept him immobile incase of a head or neck injury and waited for the paramedics. It was weird how calm he kept through the whole thing.

I haven't seen too many disturbing things. But I did see a motorcyclist get hit by a semi on the yellowhead in Edmonton. A few cars ahead of me was a large cloud of dust, and then the motorcyclist just laying there motionless on the road. I was frozen. Other people were getting out of their cars to go and help, and I just couldn't do anything. I suppose one more person wouldn't have helped much, but I should have done something other than call 911. I never did read about it in the papers, so he must have lived.
I did see a dead motorcyclist on the road with a number of people around him just holding his head. He was still in the helmet, but it must have been a foregone conclusion. A senior citizen apparently turned left in front of him and he t-boned the car.
And for some stupid reason, I then bought a motorcycle a couple of years later.

i've been fairly lucky and haven't witnessed too many disturbing things
i saw an older fellow have a massive heart attack and collapse. i called 911 and when talking to the dispatcher she asked me how serious the situation was. i told her that one person was administering mouth to mouth and anther was doing chest compressions.... so it was serious. the paramedics arrived and worked on him for quite a while. that the first time i've ever seen someone get zapped by a defibrillator and what popped thru my head was, 'huh... you don't get the big body jolt like to see on tv!' unfortunately, they were unable to revive the gentleman. apparently his heart attack was so severe that he was 'dead before he hit the ground'.
another one i can think of was driving by an accident scene. you couldn't see anything, but the smell was disgusting.... like when you burn hair but waaaaaaay worse (i'm guessing that's what charred flesh smells like)
