I have one question, is the charger a micro USB cable? or some proprietary money gouge that will force me to buy from Microsoft every-time I want to plug it into a new place without moving the plug.
This is such an off the wall comment.
For starters I'm not sure if USB could deliver the power you want. That's kind of like wanting to charge your laptop with your desktop. But like every laptop charger I suspect it would be able to handle dual voltage, so if you want to travel with it all you need is one universal adapter.
Also, this isn't Apple we're talking about. The MS mice, for instance, are about as generic as you can get, and you don't have to get one over any third-party mice unless you really want to.

not for plugging it into my computer, you can plug USB cables into wall sockets.
How do you charge your phone? Your PC or your screwed?
If I'm not mistaken, that's 5 Watts, whereas laptop chargers are around 90W.
One problem with using USB to charge it is that while I know that the USB ports on my computer don't provide the kind of juice you'd want for that, there will inevitably be users who don't. Give 'em a power brick that only plugs into the wall the tablet, and it's just about foolproof.
Things are bound to happen... But this is pretty brutal. The thing bricked during the freaking unveiling. MS is still MS.
Poor guy, that would be terrifying. He handled it pretty well. If I were doing a presentation like that I would practice that scenario constantly leading up to it. It's one of the inevitable issues when you do live demos this early.

But it’s not a laptop, it’s a tablet - looking at an ipad, or a Samsung galaxy - they both use USB plugs and an AC wall adapter like I linked. But they use their own crappy proprietary plugs at the device end. With Ipad it’s not too bad as it is popular enough that you can buy cheap aftermarket cables (as in your not forced to go to apple for it) and the USB wall charger is useful for other things/devices, but with both your buying cables that have one purpose and while I have not looked too hard Samsung ones may only be reliably found at stores that sell the galaxies and usually at a 457694503% mark-up. That is absolutely the case for the now defunct Motorola Xoom table. A wall charger with a tiny little prong that plugs into the device. The aftermarkets I could find carry concerns that they would not work or could even damage the unit and in my mind one plug that I have to carry around with me is stupid when it’s not necessary. It was simply an attempt by Motorola to force y9ou to buy from them. (I don't own any of the above devices but I use them at work)
With my personal phone (HTC desire) or a Asus transformer prime for example they use Micro-usb plugs at the device end and came with a AC wall adapter for USB cables and I bought more and have one in each room of my house that makes sense to me and one in my car, in case Im on the road or at a friends and need to plug it in... cost me nothing really as I could buy it all at monoprice.
Dealing with all these proprietary plugs at work has led me to the very simple conclusion - never buy a device with proprietary plugs.
As for you concern for stupid users er I mean people not knowing they can't charge off their laptop, I would assume the manual would tell them how to charge their device, if they fail to read it or are too dumb to remember, my heart does not bleed for them. Frankly I could care less. The stupid will always find a way to be stupid.

So did Windows 95.
It's a pre-production unit. Sure, it's hilarious that it stopped working during the unveiling, but if someone actually put into stock into that happening beyond "Well, sometimes sh*t happens", they're a moron.

Sure #### happens, but was the blue screen of death not so wide spread and frequent in Windows 95 that it got a nickname of "Blue screen of death"? If it happening during the Windows 95 unveiling and was predictive of windows 95 bricking constantly why would this be so different?
Not saying its not different... but to say anyone who draws a parallel is a "Moron" seems a bit of a strong position given MS history

BSOD pre-dates Windows 95 by quite a few years.
Tech failures at demos are nothing new, everyone has them. What, nobody remembers Jobs dropping an S-bomb live during a keynote when something didn't work right?

I believe the EU is working towards a proprietary charger ban anyways, so unless they're going to go out of their way to create a different NA version, you shouldn't have much to worry about.
I don't know why you guys are making a big deal out of the tablet bricking... all you have to do is run and grab your backup Microsoft Surface and you're back in business.

lol
Things are bound to happen = They've happened to Apple but shhh don't talk about those. This isn't any different then Steve Jobs whining about Network problems back in 2010.

Fanboys are still fanboys I guess.
You don't think an auditorium's wireless network collapsing is different than a product your presenting crashing in front of everyone, and having to run to the back of the stage to grab another one?
I think you might need to revisit your definition of "fanboy."
