I considered taking photos, but felt that photos from my 4 year old blackberry's camera would probably be worse than no photos at all.

Took the kids down there. Brought a camera. Really there was no point taking a picture of anything.
Had I never enjoyed the old one, I would have thought, "What a nice indoor park space"
Things change, I guess they did the best they could when you consider they lost all that space right in the middle.
My oldest barely remembers the old one. They really liked the ponds and the park. So no loss for them.

That's brutal. Unless there's way more in other pictures. But if that's the general idea of the whole gardens, it's nothing. Just a few plant "circles" in the midst of huge, modern/bland looking walkways. Not a fan.

Those pictures pretty much cover it. That's why I never bothered to take a picture when I went.

Off topic..that's why RIM is where it's at...how many people have a 4 year old iPhone or any other smart phone? Every new BB is like the old BB so why bother upgrading at all.

Do not like. I'm not at all resistant to change, but this ultra-sterile, bland, wide open version of the gardens is a very pale version of the original. The best part of the old gardens was that it was its own unique entity and didn't feel like just another part of the mall. This is just an overgrown food court. Pathetic

Where the hell are the hanging gardens and the Tarzan-like swinging ropes that you need to get from one end to the other? Also, where are all the exotic rainforest animals?
Please tell me its atleast hot and humid in there, with palm trees everywhere.

its so sad really. the gardens used to be beautiful and a true escape from the city. now its just a glass hole with some plants.

I saw your tweet to Markusoff, one has to wonder why the local media isn't biting on this story at all? The argument that it is public art is pretty weak too, as one could argue that the Peace bridge also fulfills that requirement in addition to its primary purpose.

I should figure out where exactly the D-gardens are in proximity to the office buildings and TD square/core shopping etc. I fail to see why the city would spend $37 on something like that - but, if I'm confused about where it's located maybe that's why. Taking away the real estate/location component, so even if it's something the city should be paying for I'll still be confused over the $37 million pricetag,

Yeah, saw your Farrell update - still amazed. Not because I know what it costs or entails, just from a proximity standpoint. But... That obviously requires me to go wander through. Which given I'm obviously too busy working across the street. . . . I won't be doing right away.

As someone who is anti-Peace bridge just allow me to see that this is a far more disgusting mis-use of public dollars.

I know it is difficult to compare the two, as they are very different things (yet similar in the fact that they can both be considered an interactive form of public art). However I wonder what the usage numbers per day would be for the gardens? We know from counts that the Peace bridge is already seeing about 6000 people a day use it, anyone care to take a guess what the gardens would see in a day?

I still don't understand the Peace Bridge hate. Is it really a super contentious issue for Calgarians? Or just here on CP?

I'll reserve final judgement until I get a chance to see it in person, but those photos are terrible! The old gardens felt like an urban oasis. This just looks like tiled flooring with a few sections of plants, not much different than what you'd expect to see in a shopping mall.
It's such a shame if those photos are an accurate representation of the finished product.

Calgary is just brutal across the board for taking things that are awesome and either knocking it down or re-developing it into something completely ####. Every time I find something I like here I know for a fact that it is doomed. So sad and so predictable. I'm all for change, but just good change.

Just went down there this afternoon and wasn't terribly impressed. I had only been to the old gardens a couple times before they shut down, but I really thought that the new gardens would be nicer considering how long it took for them to do it. As others have said, it's sterile and pretty boring. It's nice to wander directly from the food court into the gardens, but that's about the only nice feature I found.
