This is an interesting reversal of beliefs regarding genetically modified crops.

too bad that guy had already done so much damage to the reputation of GM crops, before actually learning about what he was talking about

Still it takes a lot to completely reverse your stand on an issue and admit your dead wrong. Highly recommend the video:

Ughh my sister is so gullible to anything and everything when it comes to health or losing weight. She now spend a few hundred dollars on electro muscular therapy which is making the claims the FDA would go after if this was in Iceland, trimming, lose inches, remove cellulose, body shaping, you can see the icelandic page here:

http://www.trimform.is/?page_id=9

I hate situations like this, I want so much to just tell her that she is throwing out her money but I don't always want to be "that guy."

Coke: Wait, People Thought Vitaminwater Was Good for You?

http://www.motherjones.com/tom-philp...-water-obesity

Back in 2009, the Center for Science in the Public Interest sued Coca-Cola for making "deceptive and unsubstantiated" health claims about the products. In 2010, a US federal district court judge rejected Coca-Cola's motion to dismiss the suit (document here), noting that Coke's lawyers had made a remarkable argument: "At oral argument defendants suggested that no consumer could reasonably be misled into thinking vitaminwater was a healthy beverage." In other words, no one actually believes our flashy marketing—it's obviously nonsense. The vitaminwater suit still hasn't been resolved, a CSPI spokesperson informed me.

If the government won't regulate charlatans and snake oil salesmen, will Public Interest groups have to do the job?

The Operator

Is the most trusted doctor in America doing more harm than good?

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2...urrentPage=all

Much of the advice Oz offers is sensible, and is rooted solidly in scientific literature. That is why the rest of what he does is so hard to understand. Oz is an experienced surgeon, yet almost daily he employs words that serious scientists shun, like “startling,” “breakthrough,” “radical,” “revolutionary,” and “miracle.”

In each of those instances, and in many others, Oz has been criticized by scientists for relying on flimsy or incomplete data, distorting the results, and wielding his vast influence in ways that threaten the health of anyone who watches the show.

My hygienist told me that diabetes, Alzheimer's and heart disease are caused by biofilms of bacterial that enter your body though bleeding gums. I asked which bacterium will cause this and she said "some long name that starts with a".

She's actually right about the heart disease. Bacterial endocarditis, and some atherosclerotic plaques occur when bacteria infect the heart. Some causal links exist between oral bacteria and heart diseases.

Alzheimers has nothing to do with bacteria though. Diabetes either.

Yeah. One type of heart disease basically. Streptococcus can infect the heart valves. She was talking about all things heart health. Should have clarified. Most likely she made her claims based on the one documented case of a systemic problem.

Indeed. I posted out that she was right about the heart thing because sometimes these crackpots are right about one thing and then assume they're right about everything else.

What's the old saying - even a broken clock is right two times a day?

Media Guide to Skepticism (draft)

http://doubtfulnews.com/media-guide-to-skepticism/

What is skepticism?

Skepticism is a process that uses reason and the tools of science to acquire knowledge.

The aim of applying a skeptical process to a claim is to determine if it is or isn’t true based on the evidence that exists for or against it.

Skeptic is not the same as “cynic”. Skeptics aren’t skeptical of EVERYTHING. Many things are true to the best of our knowledge and we use that knowledge to make predictions about what else might or might not be true. The “Skeptic” is often seen to be the “debunker”, the “downer”, or the “balloon buster”. That’s only true if one prefers a fictional conclusion rather than a factual conclusion. The Skeptical approach will arrive at the BEST answer, the answer most supported by science, the one most likely to be true.
