Why do people get so upset by this? It's a summer party. Geez, some of you sticks in the mud need to lighten up. It's our party. Like Oktoberfest except with western clothes instead of those weird german clothes. Not everything is a life statement.
That's really where the problem with some people lie. They can't wrap their heads around the fact that it's a summer party that's also Western themed.
Somehow dressing like a Cowboy to these people somehow means you endorse a red-meat eating, gay-bashing, redneck, republican lifestyle. Whereas wearing lederhosen during Octoberfest innocently means you just like drinking beer and having a good time.
In reality wearing Cowboy attire during Stampede is exactly same thing. Not wearing cowboy attire to the Stampede or Stampede functions is just like that guy who comes to an 80s party wearing his everyweek Friday night clothes.
With a username and avatar like that, is there even a chance of an open minded discussion.

....right and having state of shock/the trews/marianas trench/etc. perform just reek of western party atmosphere.
Do you get this uppity about people wearing Green on St. Patrick's day too?
Your comparing a local 10 day event to an international holiday. Relax, I'm not against anyone wearing western wear, just don't crucifix those who find it lame to put on a cowboy hat and boots just to try and get 'some'.

So what are you proposing? That the Stampede drop the 'Stampede' from Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and drop the whole Western thing all together?
Isn't that kinda like having a Toga party without togas?
I get that you don't want to dress up in Cowboy gear. Cool. There are plenty of people who share those views too. The Stampede fully lets people come and partake as they are too. Nothing wrong with that.
Wow, you just described every single person who "celebrates" Stampede. Kudos.
I like how you removed the most important part of my quote in order to try and prove a point.
I encourage people to dress up in their western attire and go out and have a good time during Stampede. It is an important part of the Calgary identity and has been this way forever.
I said I dislike when people are the ones who call Calgary a hick town and make fun of cowboys and country music for 355 days a year decide to throw on a cowboy hat for 10 days and then act like just because they have a cowboy hat on all of a sudden they are western.
But feel free to act holier than thou and pick random parts of peoples responses to try and prove a point.

Anyone who honestly feels this way would most likely not attend.

In all honesty...yes that is what would be preferred. Not gonna see it in my lifetime, and I feel like i'd be taking christmas away from the kids. But why the need for "The White Hat" its part of our heritage..yes, but time to move on. If Calgary ever wants to be recognized on an international level and not as a hick town then gotta drop the hole cowboy persona. I respect the people that do have western roots, and should be allowed to fully display/enjoy that aspect. I guess I just can't stand the superficial-ness of some attendees.
And no lots of cities have exhibitions without the western theme. Its not like they go hand in hand. There's rodeo and an there are exhibitions.
I'm likely gonna get flamed for this, some people don't handle change well.

Right, and Munich should drop the whole lederhosen thing at Oktoberfest, nobody has ever heard of that place. Same goes for the cowboy persona in that little Dallas place, really holding them back.
You really thought that argument out huh?

The irony of that ridiculous argument is that the Stampede is one of the primary means of recognition for the city to begin with. Cities worthy of recognition take pride in their culture and heritage and celebrate it.
What you want, flames85, is for Calgary to become Edmonton.
Thanks, but no thanks.

I make fun of country music 365 days a year. Worst invention ever.
