Luka Modric is expected to backtrack on an interview he gave over the weekend in which he intimated he wanted to join Chelsea, by issuing a statement this week in which he will attempt to rebuild the damage done to his relationship with both his club, Tottenham Hotspur, and their chairman, Daniel Levy.

After an eventful five days in Modric's career, culminating in an interview published on Saturday in which he said that his ambition lay away from Spurs – and potentially at Chelsea – the player is said to be keen to take the sting out of the situation.

Modric is expected to clarify in his statement that he does not have his heart set on a move to Chelsea – just that if Spurs agreed a deal with the club he would be prepared to go. Sources at Tottenham have said that regardless of what Modric said over the weekend, he is not in the frame of mind to go to war with the club to force a move

The Croatia international has always enjoyed a good relationship with Levy, whose last conversation with Modric at the end of the season was said to be positive. The club feel that the player was ill-advised to do the interview and did not realise the impact that his words would have just two days after news had leaked that Spurs had rejected a £22m bid from Chelsea

Villas-Boas to Chelsea for 13m pounds

most ever paid for a manager's release clause

the cull at Chelsea should be swift as he brings in 'his' guys

Ashley Young at MUFC today doing his medical, so that should be made official in a few days.

Young has amazing pace but I think his on ball skills are a little overrated. That said he will get better and be brought up a bit at Man U surrounded by quality. If Villa really gets 15-20 million pounds for him as I read this morning I think that's a great move for them although McLeish will probably use it to buy 3 hacks from Rangers.

decent player, I don't understand where he fits in the United team

he has played out wide or in the hole

United all ready have Valencia and Nani out wide (and Park for when they want to play more defensive). I would take Valencia and Nani over him but I would guess that SAF goes with Nani and Young with Valencia being a sub

Rooney basically plays in the hole

they need help in the center of midfield

He is a depth signing for sure. One area he should really help will be set pieces - MUFC haven't been great in that regard the past couple seasons.

Objective one is still without questions a central midfielder. Almost at the point of desperation to get one now. Huge hole.

Barcelona had a first summer bid of 27 million for fabregas rejected. Arsenal have told them to get real and bid closer to 50 mill

MattLawExpress Matt Law
Barcelona now considering position and next move and fabregas would like future sorted before the asia tour.

Can't blame Wenger for trying, I guess but close to 50 mil?! Madness. He's good but that's preposterous.

it's silly money for anyone, but based on the transfer prices set in the past few years he is worth at least 40m

and then you add on the 10m tax for Barca being arrogant pricks about the whole thing, theres 50m

I would be sticking it to a team like Barca too. The entitled pricks always seem to feel that they should always get something for nothing just because they're Barca.

Hell no, if you want him, come get him, if you dont have the money then get lost.

It drove me nuts during the Mascherano debacle too. If you want to go to Barca and they want you there, then fine, but they have to pay, and Hodgson took less because he was soft.

Torres goes for 50 million, why couldn't a 24 year old Fabergas fetch the same?

Do I think it will actually be 50 million? Nope but I don't think it's outlandish.

Torres went for £50M because Chelsea have to pay and everyone knows it. Its the same economy of scale that afflicts City.

Barca have a track record of being able to underpay because players want to play there so they can win and as such they undermine the selling club's bargaining position.

I dont see Fabregas going for anything close to that.

Barca are going to get the same treatment with how they have poached players the past few years

they will join Real Madrid, Chelsea, and City

United somehow still seem to buy anyone they want for 17m pounds

the bbc's quest for an exodus of North London this summer is getting embarrassing

on a story where they say Arsenal will sell Fabregas to Barca if they meet the price, without any quotes from any Arsenal employees, they throw in this gem

Sunderland signed Connor Wickham this morning, pretty excited about it.. Helps dull the pain of losing Henderson haha.. Hope Craig Gardner is next.

good signing for Sunderland, Wickham looks the real deal

and if he puts together a few good seasons they could get triple what they paid for him
