Am I the only one who loves Yogcast's on youtube, those guys are hilarious.
They're definitely a favourite of mine. If you haven't already, watch their early episodes. Part of their charm is their ineptitude at the game, and it really shows when they're just starting out.

Abandoned mines
NPC Villages (minus villagers until 1.9)
Ravines
New mobs
Cool lighting
I've been playing the prerelease, and the new features really add to the game. I was worried that I'd get bored before the official release, but this update has bolstered my enjoyment for the game.
I dont want to be rude, but what is the enjoyment of this game.
My one friend is completely and utterly addicted - almost scarily so and I am an IT guy so when I say scary addiction to a computer game, it is actually scary.
I have watched him play when I visit and I just dont see the attraction? What is it with this damn game?

Not the best person to respond, but I tried it months ago, and what I found was that there was a surprising sense of danger in digging deep into the ground. You go really deep, on and on, and there are all kind of natural caverns, lava and water. The monsters spawn in the dark so you're always racing to light torches - and when you get killed, your stuff is left there, deep underground.
I did get tired of it and I'm not interested in the building that much, but for a while it was fun. There's also a strange sense of loneliness to it, which I hope they won't ruin somehow. Difficult to describe but it has a distinct feel. Solitude and sense of space, serenity and danger.
The game is surprisingly creepy. I can't even listen to music when I'm digging deep mines or exploring caves because I'm too worried about being caught by surprise by mobs (though Creepers are silent until it's too late anyway). The new mobs they're adding add to this creepiness as well, so that gives the game something you might not expect from a sandbox game.
Overall, if you're not one to like freeform games that just let you do whatever basically, then you won't like Minecraft. Playing by myself on this game isn't nearly as fun as a multiplayer server though.
As 1.8 is showing, there is supposed to be more to Minecraft than just digging and building. You're supposed to make an adventure out of it, or get others to try out your adventure you've created.
Anyone having significant lag/framerate issues in 1.8? I'm getting maybe half the fps I used to get at best, and there's a very choppy jarring effect as I move around. Very unfortunate as I could get near 60fps all the time in 1.7.3.
I've read others having the same problem, mostly in SMP though.
It's funny, I just spent most of the night on a creative multiplayer server and had 1.7-like framerates the whole time. It was really nice though with the new lighting system. Everything looks great.
Still haven't found a stronghold yet, though I haven't wandered too far since the multiplayer maps (the ones you hold) are weird and the further from the edge of the map you go the more laggy things get.
I have a curtain wall that makes a perimeter that they take chunks out of. Inside of it and my caste are well lit enough I don't have to worry about any mobs. I didn't play minecraft for a long time before 1.8 and when I started again I could not figure out what was going on. I thought it was some kind of glitch, then one day it hit me, Endermen. My mob trap is also too tall and they are taking chunks out of it.
