18 points in 16 games for Kotalik.... kind of impressive is it not? Considering the rest of the team's top scorers are scoring about 0.5 points per game? How's Kotalik looking?

I think we got a steal out of this pick. He was a 2nd round ranked player that fell to the fourth. Would have liked to pick up Vey with one of those 4th rounders or the 3rd we used on Leach, but what can you complain about when all of your picks look like players, not to mention we had no 1st or second last year.
That was a really productive draft: Reinhart ppg Centreman, Leach .5ppg def dman, john ramage dman Captain of the USA WJC team, Bill Arnold 10 goals and 18 points so far in freshman season, Michael Ferland PPG LW light heavy weight for brandon, Karlsson a valuable back up goaltender with upside, and patrick holland near ppg player for a 7th rounder.
|
That was the strange thing with last years draft, there was a lot of 2nd round calibre players, that you could get those calibre prospects in the 4th round and beyond. Look at the Avs, they got Rutkowski in the 5th and the Stars I believe got Kevin Lind in the 6th and they were both supposed to be 40-50 overall picks. Tons of depth. It doesn't surprise me that all the players we took last year are doing good.
Hopefully Feaster, Goulet and Button can find another handful of good players in this years draft as well. Easier said than done though.

The Heat got shutout 4-0 last night. Irving allowed all four goals on 28 shots and from what I see on the scoresheet he got pulled after the second.

The loss was not due to Irving playing bad it was because W/B is so much better than the Heat or the Heat played one of the worst games of the year.
W/B took the game to the Heat from the drop of the puck until the final buzzer.
I do not remember one good scoring chance the whole game.
W/B is an example of a team that plays 2011 hockey - puck possession is everything, there is no chip it in and chase it they are in possession of the puck all the time.
The Heat not so much .

That was the impression I got too just from the Post-game release, well that and because the Penguins have been a dominant team all year.
Does anyone know of a local website in Abbotsford that covers the Heat? I know of the bclocalnews Heat Central page, that's usually where I go.
http://www.bclocalnews.com/fraser_va...s/sports/heat/
Thanks in advance, I really love being able to come here and read reports on the Heat players from people that actually get to watch them.

Ryan Howse had two goals and two assists in an 8-5 win over the Giants. Giving him 50 goals and 32 assists.
In that same game Bennett had 4 of the Giants 5 goals.
Ferland had one goal.
Reinhart did not play for the Ice tonight, not sure what his situation is.
________________
The Heat were leading 4-2 with under two minutes left in the third, but allowed two quick goals.
MacMurchy from Rheault
Armstrong from MacMillon and Cameron
Meyers from Kotalik and Nemisz
Laing from Nemisz and Brodie
Thankfully they won in a shootout..Kotalik scored the only goal by either team.
Seabrook had an assist for the Moose tonight.

That's 82 points for Howse on the season, 63 points for Bennet, 54 points for Ferland, Reinhart has 74 points. Our WHL prospects are all having career high seasons pretty much and all look solid moving forward. We should sign Bennet, Erixon and Orito soon.

82 points is what most of expected out of Howse, which is not a surprise because he's a very talented player.
It's the Bennett and, specifically, the Ferland points that I think surprised us all. Who would've guessed that Ferland, a kid who is kick ass at fighting and grinding, would also be kick ass at getting points.
Bennett has also been a pleasant surprise. We all thought he was doing well in Portland until he got traded to Vancouver... then we truly got to see what he could do.
If any of these guys can do half as good as Nemisz, Breen, Brodie, or Bouma have been doing in their rookie seasons in the AHL, then I'm a happy guy.
P.S. Nemisz is now tied with Keith for the team lead in points with 31. Brodie 3rd with 29 and leads the team in assists with 24.

Don't forget about Holland as well. He has improved on his stats from last year as well. Definetly been a good year for all of our WHL prospects and definetly an encouraging sign.

I was wondering your take on Brendan Shinniminn. As of tonight he sits 7th in WHL scoring with 90 points in 56 games. He is listed at 5'10 and has not been drafted. I think he would need to go through the draft one more time before Flames or anyone could sign him as a free agent. Do you think he is worth drafting or signing to an entry level contract?.
I caught one game on shaw tv and loved his playmaking ability and skating.

That's correct. They all have successful blueprints and pedigree, this last draft shows their offensive mid to late round recoginition skills with the kids from last year. I have a feeling that this draft will be quite deep throughout the first round. I think the flames go offense. The flames could potentially trade down and still get some quality even into the middle second round as it looks. Sure, you won't have a shot at the top but it could payoff as far as quantity is concerned.
However, you could go the other way and see who's there when we pick then target one of the chl centremen: Macneil, Scheifele, Cattenacci, Jensen, or a couple wingers peumpel, Rattie, even jurco, or kokhlachev. Or see who falls.
There is that czech kid Jaskin who looks real good. There are some american options that might fall to us as well in Shore, I might even consider Rocco Grimaldi. He may be a boom or bust due to his size but if he hits he could be pretty valuable in this new nhl.
These kids could all be there when we pick and they all look promising. Anyway, CG, you probably didn't want to read all that but, hey it's the draft and that's how the good teams stay competitive.
PS. I also think the present feature HF article about NCAA free agents is a good read if any of the descriptions hold up. There seems to be a handful of useful centremen and a couple defense options that could be appealing in the aforementioned "New NHL". I like the NCAA, it has produced many quality NHL options and stars, the 4 year developmental option always intrigues me as well.

even though Bennett was drafted at the same time, he's nearly a year older than Howse. However, this is really only his 2nd season in major junior. Hopefully he turns out to be sleeper pick
it's great that Howse is having a great 19 year old season. Often top CHL scorers are overage players; being 20 can make a huge difference in experience and physical maturity. Howse put up 31 goals as a 17 year old; 47 goals as an 18 year old; and now 50+ as a 19 year old. Increasing point totals along the way as well

I like Shinny's playmaking ability. He was suspended for 12 games for a check from behind early in the season and is still 7th in the points chase. He is undersized but has great puck control and great speed. It is always hard to tell with a player of his size how things would pan out. We had a very special player in Colton Yellowhorn a few years back that I thought had more goal scoring ability then Shinny does and he is in Europe playing hockey I beleive. Shinniman is fiesty and plays with an edge however, more of a drive in his game and really irritates opponents between the whistles. He is a great playmaker and has the ability to set up his opponents. Definately worth a look if he clears and could be picked up as a FA on and Entry Level! On a side not Holland added another goal and assist Sunday night....team is gearing up for the playoffs!
