About 15-20 years ago, Toms was actually pretty good.
But like a lot of people, when they get successful, they cheap out on things and the quality goes down.
Used to really enjoy theirs back then but haven't had one in the last 5 years+ because it's terrible.

I like Famoso pizzas but find them a little expensive. It's operated by the same guys who own Wok Box.
I'm also a big fan of the Damn Good Pizza from Spiro's on 17th. It's really delicious and filling.

Apparently it (and Pizza Bob's) have a style of crust unique to this city. I do prefer Pizza Bobs though, order one there with extra sauce (it's delicious, but they do skimp unless you ask for extra) and it's very good.
Another vote for Vogglios, and I've heard that Rea's Italian (used to be Sandros) is very good, but have yet to try it.

I am going to make a bold statement that Calgary has the best pizza in the world at least from my experience and talking with others. I go to Chicago/NYC often for work, used to live in NYC and have been to Greece and all parts of Italy where I've gone out of my way to taste their best pizzas. Giordianos, Due, Ginos and Uno are Chicago deep dish at it's best....the ones in Calgary are terrible. NYC my favorites were Lombardis, Grimaldis, Valduccis and Johns....great thin crust. Athens had some good places where you can see where Calgary gets it's influence and Italy was really good especially Naples and Rome. Super thin crusts with rich sauce and minimal cheese.
All good meccas for a good pie but the greek-style pizza here in Calgary comes out on top in my opinion. Odessey, Michaels, Spiros, Nick's and Mannnies are all superb greek-style Calgary pizza. Thick crust, lots of cheese, rich sauce, a tad greasy but not overdone and pan cooked. I have never been to Atlas so I'll have to go out of my way to check out that place as I've heard a lot of good things. I live near the core so Michaels and Mannies I frequent most often. The only chain I would waste my time on is Papa John's. The rest are garbage.

Back in the late 80's to mid 90's Gondola was serving excellent (and probably only) thin crust pie back then.
This was when NO one wanted anything to do with that style.

Pulcinellas (abc)... while many will complain that the crust can get soggy, I find it to be a nice experience as it is unlike anything else you will try in the city. Its supposed to be the only or the largest (not sure) wood burning stove in western Canada.

Good chain out of Winnipeg. Bit on the pricey side but I feel it's worth it every now and then. Winnipeg has a chain I prefer even more though, Santa Lucia, but that won't apply here. I'll have to try Pulcinellas as well if they do it in a wood stove.

Gonna say Red Carpet. $25 for a 16" pizza, is pretty hard to beat.

You are correct, in reffering to Vern's. There meat seems cheap and is razor thin. If you get the extra thick style pizza there, it is often not cooked enough in the middle and you are left eating a raw dough on the good middle pieces.

Honorable mentions to Nick's Steakhouse, Sammy's Pizza (near Fish Creek Station), and Coco Brooks.

I have enjoyed in the past:
Inglewood Pizza in Inglewood
Pizzaria Roma in Bridgeland
Volos in Knob Hill is it?
Howies in Glenbrook (That's the one 4x was talking about and I'd suggest he give it another try.)
Nick's Pizza and Steak House by McMahon
and Richmonds Pub has great pizza for pub pizza, IMO, though I've only tried the Gordie Howe.
