Committee assignment rations are generally and traditionally set according to seat distribution. This would be a committee seat for the Democrats to fill.

Well it’s fair to also think the republicans might try to take advantage of a situation like this. Fortunately the senate still does seem to be a bit more willing to not reach for the deepest depths, but nothing will surprise me.

All true. It's also true, though, that for 5 years or more the Republicans have tossed traditions and handshake agreements out the window (see Garland SCOTUS appointment v. Coney Barrett appointment).

For me it’s a bit complicated to figure out the impact of this. The MAGA Trump zealots are going to turn out for him and vote for him no matter who is on the ballot. There’s also this weird increasing group of people who see him as some sort of martyr being punished by the dems and are likely to vote for him. I don’t think Kennedy takes many votes there.

On the other side almost nobody actually wants to vote for Biden again, but they are just as anti Trump and so wil vote against him. I think that same group will see a Kennedy vote as a vote for Trump but the electorate is not always smart

In the end, what a horrid election cycle this is shaping up to be. I mean seriously, Trump, Kennedy and Biden, 2 of the 3 so far off from truth and reality in a whole host of subjects and a third slowly (or rapidly) losing to the ravages of time.
