Gary Oldman should probably fit in somewhere for something.
Denzel Washington was pretty terrific in Training Day. That's a terrifying character.

Couldn't agree more. Problem is he's never been given the giant roles, but whenever he's on screen, he chews scenery.
For those that have watched him recently in Slow Horses as Jackson Lamb, if you showed them this character he did from True Romance, there's no chance they would believe it was the same actor. The accent and voice alone seems like it can't be coming from Gary Oldman. He's not in this movie that long, but man, does he leave a lasting impression.
Super NSFW...but watch it when you are able.

DDL in Gangs of New York is one of my all-time favorite performances. He makes everyone else in a scene seem pedestrian, even DiCaprio which is no small feat

No Other Choice by Park Chan-wook is another masterpiece.
I loved Decision to Leave (and Handmaiden, Thirst, the Vengeance Trilogy etc.), but there are so many incredible elements in this that are impressive. Decision to Leave has some gorgeous transitions, superimposed shots, and camera maneuvers but he's just showing off to an insane degree with this one. My favourite of the year by far, which is saying something because I loved Bugonia too.

I'm not discounting it, but a performance of that type is just not what I'm trying to locate here in terms of a movie I want to watch. There are far more of the "all time memorable great performance in a non-dominant role" throughout movie history, there are far fewer "Hi I'm the director I'm going to point a camera at you for the better part of 2 hours and the success or failure of this film as a piece of art will more or less depend entirely on what you do with this character" movies where someone knocks it out of the park.
EDIT: Your avatar just gave me a good idea to illustrate this: I think Ian McShane as Al Swearengen is arguably the best character ever put to screen on TV, but Deadwood is quintessentially a show driven by an ensemble cast - I'm looking more for a "Bryan Cranston as Walter White" type of performance, except in the film context.

Ah, I misinterpreted the assignment.
Maybe something like Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke, and although I haven't seen it I've heard that George C Scott as Patton might fit the bill.

What about Leaving Las Vegas? Depressing as #### but that movie is nothing without Nic Cage’s spot on performance.

I was going to recommend that one as well, but thought I'd get ripped on for putting Cage in the same conversation as the others mentioned.
Great performance.

You know what’s a great Nicolas Cage performance? The family man. I know you were probably thinking I was gonna say Lord of war or the rock or adaptation.
But I think that’s legitimately one of the best Christmas movies of the last 25 years.

I should have gone with my first thought, that The Running Man would be terrible, but I read a few decent reviews and got curious. I wanted to like it and was trying to go with it, not the worst thing I've seen in a theater but it was not good. Really disappointed in Edgar Wright and anyone who gave it a good review.

I re-watched 'Rampage' today and...it is what it is, but I feel like an opportunity was missed.
Sure, giant ape, wolf and crocodile are neat and all, but they totally should have added some cooler animals like...what would a giant, genetically engineered angry sloth be like? Or a Capybara? Maybe a Koala?
Or hell...a giant Golden Retriever! Imagine the cinematic fun you could have with that!!

Cool Hand Luke is a must see. One of Paul Newmans best films.
