It is, at best, a long shot — in order for it to happen Eugene Melnyk would have to step up the club offer and Mark Stone would have to be fully prepared to do what he hasn’t done so far (commit) — but it’s worth noting the door to re-signing him in OTT has not been locked shut.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
That said, the primary focus for OTT GM Pierre Dorion is obviously trading Stone and serious suitors include WPG, NSH, CGY, BOS, amongst others. Usual grumbling about the price being way too high, but it is, as they say, a process.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Some may surmise a potential long-and-drawn Stone auction could grid lock other transactions for secondary pending UFA wingers, but I believe some who feel they’re priced out of the Stone market could act quickly to get Zuccarello from NYR or Johansson from NJ, amongst others.

Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
Again I would think Calgary would want an idea of whether they can sign Stone before paying the huge price. Jets and Preds ok with rental situation in my opinion

Good. I’m glad Treliving doesn’t like going for rentals and actually attempts to add guys to the core of the team if he’s going for them.

This would make the Flames a front runner as they would be willing to give up more assets.

Well they play out there in a few days this week.
Plus if the NHL fax machines are down, Conroy can jog over to Park Avenue and deliver the paperwork in person.

Depending on how possible it is for the Flames to feel confident. Overall it should actually hurt the Flanes chances as it means they will be less likely to push the chips in on the trade than the others shoukd the ability to sign Stone remain an unknown.

Lebrun clearly pulling back the curtain here. Just nuts that BT is willing to pay a steep price, as the second best team in the league, to do a full upheaval of the roster and prospects, with 5 weeks to go.
This would be a career defining move for him or better or worse.

The Flames are a front runner with or without Stone
Continue the process, no shortcuts

Huge price might not mean upheaval of our current roster.

Jets and Preds are addicts for those 3rd round playoff runs after getting a taste. Willing to sell their homes and kids to get another taste.
Meanwhile Tre the only one with his feet planted on the ground.

I have worked the hell out of Capfriendly on Armchair GM mode, fitting in Stone and Tkachuk is gonna take some serious work. That’s with Frolik and probably Brodie on the way out. The Neal contract sure complicates things. I sure wish we had a do over on that one.

Maybe Mike can fire Mark a text "Hey, if you get traded here, do you think you might sign?"

If the Duchene deal is the rough framework, CGY would be willing to give up the most as they would actually be guaranteeing that conditional 1st round pick in 2020, no one would pay two 1st rounders for a pure rental.
If the Flames manage this deal without losing any roster players (until trades at the draft), we would have the deepest roster I think I’ve ever seen in the modern nhl era.
Four lines all playing equal minutes...
Gaudreau - Monahan - Stone
Frolik - Backlund - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Ryan - Neal
Bennett - Jankowski - Czarnik
Hathaway
Think of the pace we could play at. We could skate everyone into the ground.

Dean Molberg @960boomer
Flames brass are all assembled now in NYC and will conduct deadline business from there. Some attended Rangers game at MSG even Zuc, Hayes and MacQuaid didn’t dress. I do believe they are in on Zuc, but probably see him as a fall back if a Mark Stone deal doesn’t happen.
Dean Molberg @960boomer
That said, they may have interest in both Hayes and MacQuaid. Hayes and Johnny were line mates in college, and MacQuaid could be some of the veteran blue line help they are seeking.

That makes no sense. Tkachuk-Backlund-Neal played with zero pace. Swapping Backlund with Ryan doesn't change the inherent lack of chemistry between the two wingers. While we're on it, I'm not sure a Gaudreau-Monahan-Stone line would be known for skating...

Honestly if the Flames missed out on Stone I think getting Zuc, Hayes, McQuiad is the perfect package.
But I don't know if it would take more to get that package than say buying individual pieces from teams

I really hope Bennett isn't going the other way in any deal. I do think his game will be a game changer in the playoffs. In an Ottawa deal I could see them demanding him and I really think that'd be a dealbreaker.
