Excellent pick Proto - I loved this movie, the music alone is worth watching for, nevermind the Dapper Dan, the harpies, John Goodman and a tour de force performance from the lead trio of George Clooney, John Turturro & Tim Blake Nelson. People who haven't seen it should rent it and watch it a couple of times and just let the adventure soak into you.

well, I generally hate musicals, but this one was pretty good. The Roger Ebert Experience selects A Prairie Home Companion.

Sweet pick, Habbie! That was a fun show for sure!

(For any who are interested, I posted my write up on Who Shot Liberty Valance a few pages back along with clips.)

My turn to pick? Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit amphetamines. Yes, in the comedy category, 6 Degrees of Troy McClure selects Airplane!

This movie is significant for a few different reasons; first, it was one of the first mainstream movies that practiced a style of comedy that was primarily a send-up of scenes from other films; mostly it was spoofing the airport disaster films that were prominent through the 1970s, but there's also send-ups of everything from disco movies to blaxploitation films. A lot of other films followed Airplane! in other genres: the Naked Gun series, Hot Shots!, and Scary Movie, just for starters, but Airplane remains one of the most successful. And while Leslie Nielsen had done a few seldom-watched comedy bits previously, he really did create a whole new second career for himself here, playing a comedic version of the same sort of character he had played with serious intent previously. To a lesser extent, the same is true of Lloyd Bridges.

But film significance aside, it's just damn funny. So may great lines, particularly Nielsen's "I am serious. And don't call me Shirley." There are elements of skit comedy here, but it hangs together and has a great pace that most skit comedy movies don't have.

Okay, clips:

I love Airplane - nice pick Stray....."There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?"

Definitely some excellent films left out there!

But when reading the tagline, does anyone kinda wince at the 9/11ish implication? Talk about something that was once funny cuz it was so unimaginable but now is something we all now are too aware is possible.

with the 318th pick in the Comedy category, DVD-eh? selects the wickedly funny:

Thank you for smoking

Nick Naylor is the Vice President of and the chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, a tobacco lobby whose stated purpose is to research the links between smoking cigarettes and lung cancer. Unsurprisingly, the group, funded by cigarette companies, does not find any link between the two. Nick's job requires him to inform the public of these results, as well as defend the rights of smokers

Wow. 2 great films in a row! "Thank You For Smoking" is a big-time sleeper, IMO. Such a good movie.

Hey, that's my pick, not Stray's! But yeah, I noticed that too about the tagline and had the same reaction to it. If you were making Airplane! today, you'd have to be so careful to make sure that nothing in it could be construed as referencing 9/11.

Oh, and nice pick with Thank You for Smoking, Czure. Aaron Eckhart has been great in pretty much anything he's ever done.

Thanks for the support brother!! I was expecting to get some flack for that pick.

And Thank you for Smoking was the pick I was going to make, but I ultimately went with one of my favourites. Eckhart was great in that movie, very good in that role. Still don't like Katie Holmes though. I just don't think I will ever buy her in any role ever.

My bad, I missed that post.

With my pick, in the sports category, I choose: The Natural.

I read the book first, and perhaps some of my enjoyment for this story is because of that, but I just think the movie was well done too. Roy Hobbs is a character that was well-played by Redford, and some of the scenes in that movie are great!

I didn't realize it would be my turn this quickly, but I'm just leaving the house for a few hours so you can ass kick me if you want and I will post my pick when I get home.

Yup, excellent film; one of the three sports movies I was willing to pick. The use of light and shadow in this film is a fantastic motif that runs through every iconic moment. If I remember correctly, the ending is way more sentimental in the movie than in the book, but it's a great moment nonetheless.

Good pick REDVAN, I had a hard time choosing between it and Bull Durham for my sports movie.

With the 320th pick, in the War catergory, Team MissTeeks selects The Patriot.

I don't watch a lot of war movies, I just don't enjoy them very much, but The Patriot is one that I like. It's set during the US War of Independence and stars Mel Gibson and a super hot Heath Ledger. Jason Issacs plays one bad ass villian as well. I haven't been able to watch this movie since Ledger died, but it might be time to bring it out again.

Here's the IMDB synopsis:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187393/

Quote:
Ashamed of his savagery during the French and Indian War, Benjamin Martin decided he would sit out the American Revolution, while his oldest son Gabriel enlisted minutes after South Carolina joined the fight. He changes his mind when his house is burned down and one of his children is killed by the savage Green Dragoon commander Colonel Tavington. Quickly realizing that traditional 18th century warfare tactics won't work, Martin organizes militiamen into a guerilla unit to harass Cornwallis' army long enough to allow the French to arrive.
Some clips, I couldn't find many that weren't too bloody so there is only a few:

Cripes, my turn again already!

No time for anything flashy right now. I take White Men Can't Jump (1992) in the Sports category. More to come.
