Yup, that's my guess as to what we'll see.
If it does happen, it's almost better than Gaudreau signing it because they don't need to clear the space this year and the Lucic and Monahan contracts ending will clear the space for next year. Then, the cap will likely jump significantly in either 2024 or 2025.

You build the best team you can and get to the playoffs. The teams are so close, that outside of a couple teams literally anyone can win any round. Kings took the Oilers to 7,Dallas took Calgary 7.. It's all any team can do.
If you blow it up expecting to build an Avs or a Tampa you'll likely be waiting a long time. There's a lot of luck in building one of those teams as well. If you can't land the players you need, by all means rebuild. But we're not far off where we were last year at this point, at least on paper.

checking stats it looks like Huberdeau had 99 hits last season which was even more than Tkachuk.
Weegar also had 30 more hits than Gudbradson. Moving forward it would be great for other teams to still think we are hard to play against.

I'm blown away by this trade. It is one of the best trades we could have hoped for. It's like were playing NHL 22.

Yup. 3:16 AM and I'm still amped up. Treliving with one of, if not the finest trade this organization has ever seen. It's a massive win no matter how you slice it.

I’m kind of thinking this whole trade needs the Gaskal treatment….I was on a long international flight and let out an audible Holy F on the tarmac once I got internet access reestablished…

This is a fun blockbuster trade, the pending UFA status is interesting. I wonder if they try to get a deal as quickly as possible or whether they see what team they have and remain open to selling at the TDL. Interesting trade with a lot left in the air.
If they're going to try to compete, which it seems like, then BT had best get to work as I don't see how the team as currently constructed has any chance of getting past Colorado.
Also lol of course the marquee return is another winger. Calgary Flames finally build around a C for once in 30 years challenge (impossible).

Does anyone know the last time two players who each scored 100+ points the previous season were traded for each other?

Wow, what a trade!
Anyone claiming we need to sign both incoming players to extensions really has negative blinders on. Extend Huberdeau and remove Weegar and you don’t think the trade is fair value for Tkachuk? It’s easily in line or better than rumoured returns, and that’s before adding even more asset value in Weegar.
You can bet this deal wouldn’t have been made if Huberdeau wasn’t interested in signing with the Flames and they weren’t at least in the same ballpark on contract details. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s extended within a few days. It’s pretty common for these deals.

That's probably why I'm struggling with this trade in the first place, like what is Treliving's ultimate goal here, is it to just make the playoffs or is it to compete for the Stanley Cup?...because in my opinion, I think we're considerably further away from the Cup then last season.
|
We had one of the all time worst goalie performances. Sutter should’ve made a change, if only to give Markstrom time to regain composure. That probably still may not have been enough, because when we did respond…Toronto.
No trade we make could solve that.
This is a grade A great trade for the Flames

I'll bet a hardy handshake that we do.
Not that I think that'll happen, but the risk/reward is too good to pass up :P

I took a quick look and the last time two players who had scored 100+ points in their most recent season and were traded for each other might be Gretzky for Jimmy Carson.

There we go, all fixed... right... right?
Seriously though, wishing Tkachuk all the best in Florida.

That's the last one I could think of offhand.
Close but no cigar: Mike Bullard (105 pts. in 1987–88) for Doug Gilmour (105 pts. in 1986–87). Same year as the Gretzky trade, too.
Clearly, if the Flames want to pick up a 100-point player on the cheap, Brad Treliving needs to get on the phone and call 1988. They were growing on trees back then.
ObOnTopic: I'm flabbergasted by the trade. This feels like the Hamilton-Lindholm deal all over again, but with older players. If either Huberdeau or Weegar re-signs, it's a win for the Flames. If both, a blowout win.

Huberdeau will sign soon. He is not going to risk having a bad year with the new team and lose a lot of money. He gets Johnny’s contract, maybe a little bit more. Same with Weegar.
