I don't mind the mixed up grid, but it definitely makes the whole weekend feel a bit less relevant.
I wonder if it should be a more subtle but longer lasting penalty...I'd probably link it to reduced tire allocations for quali/race day. Of course the number of components they track makes it complicated, but:
instead of 5 place penalty, it becomes 1 less set of tires that race
10 places = 1 less set for next 2 races
15 places = 1 less set for next 3 races
etc
I dunno if it would be enough of a deterrent, but it would stop teams from being so deliberate about when they take the penalty
I feel like the WDC already being wrapped up is a bigger reason qually isn’t exciting. Having no competition for pole also obviously a factor today.
I also blame FOM for not being able to live update the standings with penalties. Even after each session would be fine. Doesn’t help that no one at sky has any idea how to calculate them.
He posted this because the FIA took 3 hours to announce the grid. Why it took the FIA 3 hours to publish it though, who knows. The way the penalties are determined it’s actually pretty straightforward. Maybe they needed to confirm with teams what parts were being replaced before finalizing.

Because the unpenalized drivers get to move up and fill empty slots before Perez gets slotted in.
Even Perez got to benefit from this and moved up to 13th because there weren’t enough unpenalized drivers to fill all the slots.
