I don't think a manager ever got this much game-to-game criticism in Jays history?

Partially because the guy just makes some puzzling moves when the best thing to do is the obvious thing. Seems he does the opposite too often.

I don't know...Every game by the end of the 5th inning the pitchhcount is high 80s -90s. Starting pitching needs to keep the pitch count down. They aren't making is easy on the bullpen.

Ya its easy to place the blame on Montoyo but without a real pre-season to get the starters ready and their arms in shape they are going to be on fairly limited pitch counts. With the abbreviated start there is a reason so many pitchers are tweaking their arms including 3 Jays starters. In addition the Jays starters with the exception of Ryu have had pitch counts in the mid 40s by the third inning most games, they're not making it easy on themselves. If anything the bullpen has been a strength of the Jays this season and Montoyo knew this and went with his most trusted weapon and the pen gave up 6 runs, that game is on the pen for blowing it, not Montoyo.

I dunno. We’re a month into the season now. Including a 3 week summer training and Montoyo is still pulling pitchers after 80. That seems a bit of a stretch. Tonight Anderson was at 84 pitches after walking Moreland. He was obviously pitching around a guy who had gone 2-2 already and that was his first walk of the night. And the bottom of the order was up. I think 9/10 you take your chances with your starter who was throwing strikes and was pitching around Moreland.

I wish this was an isolated example but I feel like Montoyo is in over his head with this team. It seems like there are multiple times a game where there are cross ups between pitchers and catchers. Or curious outfield shifts. Or even a general lack of accountability. And that falls on the manager. I think he might be a great bench coach. But not a manager.

Yeah, that doesn't hold any longer. These guys are on their 5th or 6th starts. They are good to go for 100 but Montoyo is hook happy.

What's worse? Push your starter up to 100 pitches or have all your bullpen guys making appearances in almost 50% of the games?

Nope, sorry, Chase Anderson missed time in the abbreviated pre-season with an oblique strain and made his first start on August 9th. This is most definitely not his 5th or 6th start, in fact it was his 3rd start. The limited pitch count makes sense. I don't love Montoyo's moves but in this instance I think it was fine.

It was his 4th start(Aug 8th, 15th, 20th, and tonight) and he threw 80 pitches in his last start. Dude should’ve been stretched out when he wasn’t really struggling...Sorry if this is arguing over semantics but I really have no confidence in Montoyo and I think he is managing himself out of a job sooner than later.

Thanks for the correction. I still think my point stands though. Roark went to 96 pitches last night, and 94 in his start prior, I don't see people mentioning that.

You also have to factor in the situation. He ended up using 5 pitchers yesterday. And today is a bullpen day.

If they lose games to the lowly Red Sox because the pen is thin, he should be fired just for that.

They will most certainly handle him extra carefully. I wouldn't be shocked if that's the last we saw of him in this shortened season either.

Probably best possible news really when it comes to the dreaded "elbow tightness", really it's a muscle strain and the article says they anticipate him playing catch this weekend. Also the rest of that article said Giles is progressing well which is good news too!

Nice to have Giles injured during back to back trade deadlines. Montoyo definitely shares the blame with that one last year.

Has Tellez ever hit a bomb less than 400 feet? The dude hits absolutely massive shots.

Big man with a big bases clearing double to blow it open. Jay's in a much needed laugher. and Yamaguchi did a great job eating innings early on.

Yamaguchi has certainly come around nicely.

Imagine if Merryweather is for real....

I'd given up on the guy to be honest.

Heh, here comes SRF in to pitch.

Interested to see what his velocity is looking like. He had lost a few ticks last season.
