Is drug addiction a mental illness?

Yes, because addiction changes the brain in fundamental ways, disturbing a person's normal hierarchy of needs and desires and substituting new priorities connected with procuring and using the drug. The resulting compulsive behaviors that override the ability to control impulses despite the consequences are similar to hallmarks of other mental illnesses.

In fact, the DSM, which is the definitive resource of diagnostic criteria for all mental disorders, includes criteria for drug use disorders, distinguishing between two types: drug abuse and drug dependence.

Many people who regularly abuse drugs are also diagnosed with mental disorders and vice versa. The high prevalence of this comorbidity has been documented in multiple national population surveys since the 1980s. Data show that persons diagnosed with mood or anxiety disorders are about twice as likely to suffer also from a drug use disorder (abuse or dependence) compared with respondents in general. The same is true for those diagnosed with an antisocial syndrome, such as antisocial personality or conduct disorder.

Anyways, I'm done with this conversation. There's enough information from reputable sources (peer-reviewed, etc.) out there that you can either choose to get informed, or choose to continue to be ignorant and repulsive about it.

As the losses mount, Chip Kelly's future with the Eagles becomes more of a storyline. The team was demolished -- at home, no less -- by the Buccaneers on Sunday, and according to the agent of one Eagles player, the third-year coach has lost the locker room.

"Chip Kelly has lost the team," the agent, who requested anonymity because of fear of retribution against his client, told NJ.com. "Between the losses and his bulls--t methods that aren't working, I can tell you that the players have tuned him out."

The agent also suggested that at least one player was using an injury to stay off the field because "he won't play hurt for Chip."

He's gotta be gone after the season.

Nothing short of amazing that Sanchez is still in the league - even as a backup - in his 7th year now. The way he looked 3-4 years ago, I figured at this point he would've been a backup in Winnipeg.

Funniest thing is even with this disaster the Eagles could very well be 1 game out of the playoffs by Sunday evening. 10 passing TDs in the last 7 quarters is pretty ridiculous though.

Chip McDaniels HAS to be gone now, right? First year with full control and he literally turned a perennial playoff team into total garbage. Forget the plentiful scheme issues, his personnel decisions have been questionable at best and hubris filled lunacy at worst.

I went from believing Kelly would definitely be back a few weeks ago, to this week wondering if he would be back next season. After today's game I'm wondering if he will even finish the season as the Eagles are playing like a team that has quit on their head coach. I think the worst part of this for Eagles fans is that when Kelly arrived that team had some really nice pieces but he's gutted that roster and his guys aren't nearly as good as the guys he let go. That team could be bad for a while.

To put in perspective how bad the Saints are, especially that D, this same Eagles team beat the Saints by 3 TD's and put up a 40 burger (39, close enough) on them last month.

Sounds like the dude had a choice to stay in Cleveland surrounded by a support system and work on getting better both on and off the field, or he had a choice to travel to Austin Texas and party like a rock star all the while lieing to his employer about his behaviour.
