Battlefield Las Vegas for guns.
They'll pick you up from your hotel in a military Humvee
(for free), you go shoot guns (tons of fun) and then they take you up/down the strip or anywhere you want (back to hotel, bar, peelers, etc).
Do it!

Just got back from Vegas and after going to a pub that had $14 usd Guinness (Todd English P.U.B) we went to Ellis Island Casino and Brewery just off the strip behind Bally's/Paris, their beer was $3 a pint, and it was excellent. The Hefe and the stout were particularly good. The karaoke bar was good...if not a little smoky and divey...but it was all part of the experience.

Pro-tip: get a US sim card. Apple has their special Apple roaming sim. Else, you can buy a T-mobile sim if you have an unlocked Droid. Worth it if you're in the state for even a week, I find. Big advantage: can use uber/lyft to save on taxi fares

I found that the SIM cards needed to be activated every 3 months or they became useless. Not worth it unless you were there frequently

That place is a hidden gem. A favourite for locals as well. The brew made in house is free if you're gambling and the BBQ restaurant it top notch.

For anyone left playing poker after the fad died, Vegas offers fewer and fewer choices of where to play.

Poker tables keep decreasing on Nevada casino floors
By The Associated Press

LAS VEGAS (AP) — When the Monte Carlo casino closes its eight-table poker room in about a month as part of a $450 million overhaul, the Las Vegas Strip will be down nearly a quarter of the tables it had a decade ago.

Yeah, the MGM is the only decent poker room on that end of the strip. Wouldn't surprise me if the Luxor closes their poker room as well. Usually one 1 or 2 tables running at any time.
A lot of of options in the middle area. Caesars Palace, Bellagio, Venetian, Aria, Flamingo, Planet Hollywood, Harrahs, Mirage, and Wynn.

I have never played poker in Vegas before, but might next time I go. Do they have an equivalent 1/2 table? Or would I be paying a lot more to play there?

As much 1/2 as you want. Venetian has 1/3.

May not be as many tables on the strip as there once was, but there are still a bunch of smaller venues elsewhere that will see action going on any time of the day and have 3 "tournaments" daily.
I was there last week and stopped into Sams Town and it was hopping, mind you people were coming in for the NCAA tourney so that may have inflated the mid-week crowd beyond normal.
http://www.samstownlv.com/play/poker-room
Craziest thing las week though was a bizarre discovery i made. I had won some money on Monday and Tuesday and was really trying not to keep going to the casino to give it back to them. So I decided to rent a car for a couple days and just go joy riding about. Wednesday morning i drove out west to the mountains and went for a bit of a walk. It was getting hotter than hell though, so i jumped back in the car and went back to the hotel. I was scheduled to go see Billy Idol at the HOB that night but after the morning the last thing i wanted to do was go sit with a 1000 sweating people for the evening.
I decided I would then venture out to watch the Flames/Bruins game, so I googled where to watch hockey in Vegas (specifically games that werent on NBC or Fox Sports)and it came down to two real options. There is a place in the shops of Planet Hollywood which was across the street from where i was staying and then another place called Brooksys on the West side of town.
http://www.brooksys.net/
So I drove out that afternoon just to know where it was and make sure the Flames game would be shown. Well, was i surprised. When you first walk in...all you see is an arena. The bar is at one end of an actual full sized sheet of ice and there was a game going on at that time! I thought that was pretty cool. So I sat at the bar and the bartender grabbed me a beer and we started chatting about getting that nights game. After being assured it would be on, she then asked me if I knew what was going on there. I looked at her like she had spoken Greek to me and she pointed up at one of the TV's and said look.
It was on the NHL network and there was Chris Chelios in full gear, obviously just finished playing a game, getting interviewed by a couple network personalities. I looked at her and my face must of said "OK..so what" because she then said "turn around". I looked over my left shoulder and about 40 feet away in the corner of the "dining room" the interview was taking place! I was a bit dumbfounded. I figured i would wander over and get a picture of the whole thing, so i got up and went around the dark glass barrier that seperated the dining room and the bar. I turned that corner and came face to face....with Wayne freaking Gretzky!! In the middle of the desert, on a Wednesday afternoon around 1 PM. It was a bit surreal. So I chatted with him a minute and took a selfie (I hate myself) with him. He then bolted and i started to recognize a few other faces.
turns out it was his fantasy camp that raises a bunch of money for his foundation. A bunch of guys forked out 15 grand a piece to hang out with and play with a bunch of retired NHLers.
Just a real twist to a pretty benign Vegas trip.

Anyone see this? The roof of the Bellagio mall was on fire.
Quote:
Flames ripped across the roof of the Bellagio's shops and restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip as tourists watched the nighttime fire reflected in the iconic fountain show at the hotel-casino, authorities said Friday.
No injuries were reported in the late Thursday blaze, which didn't reach inside the Via Bellagio mall, Assistant Clark County Fire Chief Larry Haydu said. Damage was limited to the roof.
Gusty winds fanned the flames, forcing employees to evacuate tony stores such as Tiffany & Co. and Chanel. Pedestrian bridges to Bally's and Caesars Palace closed, and busy Las Vegas Boulevard was shut down.

Anyone have experience with taking uber from the airport to the strip? Looks like it will be about half the price of a regular cab.

About half. It is a bit of a long winding walk to the Uber pick-up area, and not great signage last time I was there in October.

Uber in LV was great. You catch it on the 2A (I believe) level of the parking garage at the airport...

Some random notes after spending 4 nights in Vegas.
Uber/Lyft - follow ride share signs to parkade in Terminal 3 for pick-up. Ride back to airport from Flamingo was only $10 on Uber.
Flamingo is unique - inexpensive so always busy. I like that it is central to everything on the strip. Pool area is ok, but monotonous club music is annoying. Upgrade to Go rooms with a view of the Strip. Buffet is ok for brunch. Flamingo has 5 cent beers every day between 5pm and 6 pm.
Between Flamingo and Linq is a new promenade, with many dining and drinking options. There is an In and Out Burger there, mexican, fish and chips, irish pub, etc. The High Roller ferris wheel is a stag option - you can rent a cabin and a bartender. A cabin can hold up to 40 people.

Best Mexican food - Javiers at Aria - try the Cabo Azul. Also, Border Grill at either Mandalay or Caesars.
Slotzilla Zipline looks fun on the Downtown strip. No lines in the afternoon mid-week.
Our favorite find was around East Freemont (go a block or two east of Slotzilla). There are many new "foodie" spots. La Comida looked great for mexican. Beauty Bar looks like a great live music venue. The new Container Park is a great Oasis, with nice bars and restaurants. I liked East Freemont district a lot.
https://downtowncontainerpark.com/
China Poblano at Cosmopolitan is a great fusion of chinese and mexican - dim sum and tacos.
The new NFL stadium is going across the Mandalay.
Remember to bring sunglasses when you go to Vegas.
Parasol Down is a classy place to go for a drink by the water at Wynn. Cool artistic show on the water every 30 minutes. Cigar smokers can ruin the vibe. Seemed to be a few older European men there with their much younger "dates".
