Well the Monahan situation would be incredible. I just have a feeling those kinds of trades are going to be rarer. That was a ridiculous price to pay to lose Monahan.
Guess I'm saying if Edmonton offered the equivalent of the Dallas deal, but insert their first instead of the Dallas second and we take on Ceci, well that sounds like an OK deal to me. I'm hoping the Flames have ample cap room next year but we'll see about that. Ceci does help you fill out the roster at least.
Of course this is all speculation, we don't know what was offered.
If nothing else, I'd love to see Flames do something like Jersey did in this deal. Gaining a 4th for doing basically nothing. The whole point of trading Zadorov early was to gain space for the deadline.

^^. Yes, I posted elsewhere that we can't expect GMs to repeat previous bad deals. And I agree, if it's a nothing or minor recovery for Calgary and Ceci is just a warm body on D instead of, say, Oesterle, fine.

Grushnikov is the best defenceman on the ice at this Wranglers game, and it's not all that close.

He's playing with Pysyk.
Kuznetsov is with Aspirot; Poirier, playing in his first game since October, is with Poolman.

Doesn't matter. Internet scouts who "do this for a living" told us he sucks.

I've really come around on this deal.
With scouts already viewing the back half of the 1st round week after pick 20ish (where the Stars will be at worst), the difference in prospect between Dallas' 1st and 2nd round picks might end up being minimal to the scouts anyways (or a difference of 3-5 prospects) with how much lists are expected to fluctuate after the first 20 picks.
Plus Grushnikov, who is obviously not the sexiest name, but by all accounts sounds like a 20-year old left-handed Chris Tanev-lite. To be as serious in the defensive end as he is combined with excellent skating and a great first-pass (just going off scouting reports) sounds like a great combination. His character and dedication to be a pro also seem like excellent ingredients.
If we get an excellent 4-6 shutdown D with elite gap control, great skating and great first pass out of Grushnikov, that's well worth his 2nd round draft slot, if not a late 1st on his own.
Plus, with how stacked and good Dallas is looking, there is a very non-zero percent chance that the Flames do get the conditional 3rd.
Just from pick-value perspectives, I think it ends up looking really nice (and 10x better than the rumored 1st + cap dump offers CGY had from other teams)
- 2nd + 2nd + cond. 3rd
- 2nd + late 1st (close-to-NHL-ready prospect) + cond. 3rd
I'm very much warmed up to it.

Yeah I had read that Flames viewed Grushnikov as more valuable than a first round pick. The trade really comes down to hitting on their evaluation of him.

The Stars and Flames have both been really good at spotting talent that they can draft in the later rounds. If they both agree that Grushnikov is a player, that says something significant about his chances.
The Flames in particular have been adroit in filling up the prospect cupboard despite a woeful shortage of picks. They keep finding gold late in the draft, where other teams see nothing but straw. Tod Button should change his name to Rumpelstiltskin.

In this day of the score and win($$$) it's hard to find a defenseman that takes pride in actual defense, it seems Grushnikov prides himself in that.

Wonder why Solovyov isn’t playing?
Who would come out when he is in you figure?

Glad to hear Grush looks good.
When Hanifin is dealt, hopefully he gets recalled and never looks back.
