sim city 3000 is a $10 app on the ipod touch! don't need win7, just the iPad (and preferably an updated app so it doesn't need pixel doubling)

Why does he need Windows 7? He can play SimCity and Civilization both on the iPad (or iPhone, or iPod Touch).
Edit: Command and Conquer Red Alert, Need for Speed Shift, Fifa 2010, Madden 2010, etc etc etc.
Mmmm... Civilization...

There was an early review of the HP slate that didn't sound overly positive. It wasn't a reviewer I'd heard of so I'd like to see more. I'm interested to see how it does how it's more of a device that speaks to the people that had specific problems with the ipad.

Interesting... I just looked at their site, and http://cdn.medgestore.com/images/pro...tail03-med.jpg intrigues me.

I think MS has a long way to go before I ever trust them enough to put one of their handheld OSes on something of mine again. Too many memories of wishing I was rich enough to just smash my WinMobile phones into little tiny bits and pieces... every... four... hours...
Edit: Man, part of me still wants to buy one of those old HP handhelds just so it can finally get what it deserves.

I guess it depends on how hard you drop it. It would cushion the blow a bit for sure.
I wouldn't use it without a case. It feels like it's going to slip out of your hand at any time.

I noticed a couple of retailers on Amazon.com will ship to Canada. Do you think its safe to order from a retailer listed on Amazon.com if they are highly rated? I’ve never used Amazon.com to order from a third party retailer, but it seems like there would be some security there since payment is handled through Amazon.

I talked to a friends wife who used KTrain's iPad on the weekend. Her review was quite a bit more glowing than I'd expect from somebody who I wouldn't describe as "tech-crazy". I get to play with one on Saturday ... I'm pretty pumped.

What are they charging for shipping? I know there are some companies out there that specialize in shipping items to canada, but it can get pretty pricey.

After using my iPad for a week, I think it will get better reviews from those who are not "tech crazy" than from those that are.
I was with my mother at a coffee shop on the weekend and she wanted to check her e-mail. I asked which she wanted to use, the laptop or the iPad. She wanted the iPad "because it's easier to use". Now the techies will suggest that it is dumbed-down for stupid people. I think it just makes technology more accessible to people that otherwise wouldn't use it.
For me, it just means I don't have to carry around the laptop unless I plan on doing some development. My usual uses for the laptop are watching movies, playing games, checking e-mail and web surfing. So 95% of the time, I can leave the laptop at home and just take the iPad.
The only bummer for me is that I purchased E.R. Season 12 from Future Shop instead of from iTunes. It takes absolutely forever to convert the videos to mp4 to load them onto the iPad.

iPad USB port?
Quote:
Apple's Camera Connection Kit for iPad began shipping earlier this week and customers have started receiving the adapters.
A few notes of interest have been collected on the internet. This includes:
- USB headphone/headset will work on the iPad through the connection kit. Skype phone call was tested and "the quality was just terrific" - Tidbits
- USB keyboards can be used - TUAW
- iLounge had some early notes which revealed that the iPad emails pictures out at 2048x1536 resolution rather than the iPhone's 800x600 resolution, but if you copy/paste the images into an email, you can get full resolution images emailed out.
- Once you connect to your Mac, iPhoto brings in full resolution images with EXIF information intact. - iLounge

It's just good design. Techies are afraid of losing their smugness (although why they would be, who knows. the tech field is ripe with products to be smug with 'stupid consumer sheep' [or whatever denigrating term you want to call your (grand)parents])

I think my iPad was the first:
- to be used in a helicopter over the Grand Canyon
- to have the full first season of L.A. Law loaded onto it

I sure would be really upset if I lost my smugness over my grandparents by them buying an iPad. The worst part would be when they didn't call me anymore when they clicked on a random attachment or randomly deleted email.
I think the iPad is a good product, although I have yet to use one, I am assuming that everyone that has isn't a total idiot. I think that for me though, it falls a bit short of what I need in a mobile computing platform. Not by much though.

Well, I work as a programmer for a living and am pretty much a total geek and I will be getting an iPad once it's readily available and perhaps a little cheaper. I could see it being very useful for several things, such as sitting in my living room, watching the Flames game and posting on CP...

Managed to play with one today. Hot damn. I expected to be impressed, but was more pleased with it than I thought i'd be. I honestly didn't find it to be like a netbook or a big iPod touch. I honestly can't explain what it was that intrigued me about it ... it just felt really polished.
I was surprised at how much I liked the wall street journal app. I understand it has it's faults, but it worked brilliantly. I love that it was layed out like a standard newspaper, not just a listing of stories like you'd see on a newspaper website. The little video in some of the stories played full screen, great quality and instantly.
The colour also was something that struck me as unexpectedly strong. I'd heard the Marvel app looked vibrant, but I was shocked at how badly I wanted to read a comic.
I found the size difference for videos to be significant. I watch a ton of tv and movies on my iPhone, and seeing a video clip on the ipad was phenomenal. One thing I didn't notice was the lack of widescreen. Letterboxing was heavy, but honestly I think it would feel worse in your hands if it wasn't the shape that it is. It feels like a book, and I liked that.
Finally the keyboard. I pride myself on being a damn good iPhone typist. I expected to be pretty good at it, but I was almost immediately as good at it as i am with a regular keyboard. Sure I made more mistakes but the auto correct is so strong that I was stunned at how accurate it ended up.
I'd like to try it with a case ... Having it tilted at a slight angle seems like it would be key. I just had it on my lap or on a coffee table to type and while it was easy, I wouldn't want to do anything heavy at that angle.
The next month is going to BLOW.

I am going to Vegas in July; I have no idea how I will resist looking at and playing with one of these while there. If my wife is there ... I'll get The Look. And I'll probably be shaking as I put the iPad down and say "wait for the 3G version ..."
